Brown Wasp pulls you into the funny, self-deprecating world of Sarah St. John, a Canadian woman in the throes of an edgy inner journey through illness, healing and redemption.

Sarah, with husband in tow, travels to a spa, hoping for a cure in the restorative waters. Sarah’s reflections on the horrors of disease and her ravaged physical body are both wickedly funny and beautifully evocative.

Brown Wasp was the winner of the Canadian National Playwriting Competition award for a one-act play in 2000. Recently the play has been updated for a 2023 audience and is now touring Canada, to critical acclaim: “wonderful humour and deep wisdom” (Winnipeg Fringe Review), “heartwarming humanity and perfectly timed moments of hilarity”, (Chelsey Prince, Ottawa Review)

A prolapsed uterus has never been so shockingly hilarious!

Meah Martin’s script moves along at a comfortable pace, glancing across comedic detours, and allowing the poignant moments to sink in. Brown Wasp never overstays its welcome, and when the lights went black at the end of the play, the audience was shocked at how quickly 50 minutes had passed.

Megan McArton, starring as St. John, captivates the audience within her first moments on stage. McArton brings a warm presence and a sharp wit to her storytelling, and her ability to deliver laugh-out-loud moments followed immediately by sobering realities is nothing short of masterful. McArton connects with the audience in a way that few performers can – earnestly inviting you into the messily beautiful intricacies of St. John’s life with ease.
