The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio, the internet, and in outer space (on the space shuttle Endeavour). The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when some members of the student cabaret group, The Queen’s Players, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station CFRC. Soon the group became The Arrogant Worms (Chris Patterson, Mike McCormick, and Trevor Strong) who have since toured ceaselessly across Canada (and select other parts of the world), released 13 albums, and recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Their song, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, has been covered by bands such as Captain Tractor and The Longest Johns, and their Happy Happy birthday song is a viral sensation with over one hundred million views of the various fan videos on YouTube. More than thirty years after they began, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.

BRACKET DRAG SERIES
An exciting form of racing that creates a unique community, where racers and their friends, families and fans enjoy a weekend at the track and a chance to get out with others with a passion for racing. But it also means some highly competitive Drag Racing. Fans can see dragsters, cars, trucks, and Junior Dragsters, all of which are competing for prize money and the all-important series points that go toward series championships at the end of the season.
The Bracket Drag Series combined with the NHRA Division 6 regional competition is the weekly series where local sportsman racers vie for year end points championship. Electronics, Non-electronics, Top Eliminator, Cash is King 1/8 Mile, Street Sportsman and Jr. Dragster

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a guided writing prompt.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary.

Facilitator: Fran Kimmel
Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel will hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

Featuring Buddy Holly songs and stories, and a second set of covers from other 1950's artists mixed in with their own original songs - makes for a full night of 50's style rock & roll!

Confusionaires are a world-class traditional rock & roll band that are steeped in both big-city rock & roll and small-town country music. Hailing from Edmonton, Canada, the trio of musicians has built a sound that’s synonymous with the best country and rockabilly acts around, with a strong penchant for original songwriting.
Since they began to record their third full-length album, a pandemic project “Westernization,” Confusionaires have broadened both their sound, and their reach beyond the barstool dwellers to include not only independent radio listeners, but also the festival and theatre-going audiences of Alberta and beyond. Their push to reach live music fans in these settings has proven fruitful, growing their fan base and their status beyond what seemed possible when they performing in the spring of 2016.
To date, Confusionaires have played over 100 shows in Western Canada, having played gritty punk rock shows and pristine theatre concerts alike, earning new fans in both settings. Now the trio is embarking on their first-ever international tour, which takes them to Nayarit, Mexico to play 8 shows between February 16th and 26th, 2024 before returning to Canada to start pre-production on what will be their fourth studio album.

Under the Rocks is one of Canada’s premier emerging bluegrass acts. This heartfelt, talented bluegrass quartet that blends uplifting energy with a reflective reverence for the difficulties of reality that marries joy and sorrow and declares “YES”. Yes to all that it means to be alive on this planet, here and now.  

Hailing from Kelowna, Canada, Under the Rocks has emerged from a city with no other bluegrass acts to become one of Canada’s premier bluegrass bands. Featuring acoustic guitar (Jordan Klassen), fiddle (Chloe Davidson), banjo and mandolin (Chris Baxter), and upright bass (Nils Loewen) the band makes a big sound that tips its cap to tradition while incorporating singer-songwriter music intentionally put together with clever, inventive song arrangements, emotive instrumental breaks and powerful vocal harmony. Their shows commonly feature dancing, laughter, joyful hoots and hollers and serene moments accompanied by tears and tranquil sighs of release or appreciation.

We are looking at creating intentions and living creatively in January. As part of this theme, we invite you to partake in an artist panel discussion on creating space for art and creativity in our lives, figuratively and literally! Including artists from multiple disciplines, we are looking to discuss how they successfully create space for their work (their physical space, penciling it out in their day-to-day, mentally decompressing/getting in the mindset, etc). This will be a guided discussion and then time for Q&A from the audience.Free to attend.
 
Panelists:
Christel Langan:
Christel Dawn Langan is a local artist who was raised and lives in Lacombe Alberta. In 2005, she received her Bachelors of Fine Art from NSCAD University in Halifax Nova Scotia. She paints with, oil, acrylic, encaustic and alcohol ink. She has also begun to use mixed media.
In 2012, Christel won a Master’s award for her painting ‘Blue Straw’ in the Alberta Community Arts Club Association’s, Alberta wide show. In 2014, her encaustic painting ‘Crystal’s Choice’, won the Presidents award at the ACACA Alberta wide show which is best overall painting in show. ACACA purchased this painting for their permanent collection.
Christel began selling her art at The Main Gallery in Lacombe, AB from 2017 until it closed in 2019. She continues to sell art works at different art shows in Alberta.
Creating art is how Christel deals with life. She enjoys focusing on small details and trying to figure out how to best show what she is seeing. In 2017, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Art allows Christel to feel like this is something she can still control in her life. It allows her to make some sort of sense in her always changing world.

Miji Campbell: 
Author of Separation Anxiety and Creator of Write Where You Are workshops. As a kid, I'd always dreamed of being a writer, but got serious about it after I had kids of my own. Five years into motherhood, ten years into a teaching career, I began to write. Eventually, my articles were featured in magazines and newspapers. After several years of writing about other people's life experiences, I wanted to write about my own. I went back to university to explore life writing and memoir. I hoped to write a book. Which sounded easy at the time. What I did learn was how writing personal stories helped me take care of myself. They balanced and sustained me. And I began to share this experience with others, offering "Write Where You Are" workshops to discover and honour the stories in each of us.
Mike Szabo: 
Mike Szabo had a late start to his music career. Truth is, he never saw it coming. In just a few short years Mike has written his own book of songs and has been featured on CKUA, CBC and Windspeaker Radio. What he loves most though, is perform for a live audience.  
Mikes school of music?Decades spent around Alberta Campfires, singing the songs of the some of the world’s best songwriters. While you may well hear those influences in his music, Mike has definitely found his own voice and his songwriting is beginning to be noticed. 
With words that don’t hold back and with his heart on his sleeve, Mike paints a vivid picture of life and the world around us, transporting you from a seat in the audience, to a special place in your memories and your heart. 
2024 brought Mike invitations to play his songs at folk clubs, festivals, civic events, house concerts and songwriters showcases around Alberta and with a new studio album soon to hit the airwaves, 2025 could be a busy year for this Alberta singer songwriter. 
Veronica Graves: 
Veronica Graves is a local Felt artist who was born and raised in the county of Ponoka. She grew up wild and free playing and exploring deep in the woods, which fueled her passion for nature.
 She has held many professional positions in work but the fiber arts have been her true passion and calling since 2018. Since then, felting has been a journey of discovery, healing from trauma, and teaching others.
Veronica has no formal training with fiber arts although her background in other mediums was part of her normal upbringing with her family. Pottery, painting, and gardening to name a few. She learned most of her techniques from other fiber artist in Russia via online classes.
Some publications Veronica was honored to be part of were in Prairie Living Magazine, Celebrate!- a magazine collaboration from felt:: feutre Canada, and Red Deer Scene.

This high-energy, fast-paced show pits teams of improvisers against each other in a fierce, no-holds-barred battle of wits and laughs! Fuelled by the suggestions you give us, our skilled improvisers make up the entire show on the spot, off the top of their heads. Created by Keith Johnstone in Calgary, Theatresports® is performed by companies all over the world. Rapid Fire Theatre is one of the biggest and longest running (since 1980!) producers of the show on the planet. This show features two acts. In the first act, our two Theatresports teams compete head-to-head. In the second act, the members of the winning team become rivals as they compete in a Maestro match, where only one performer will remain standing by the end!

New Works is hosting a workshop by Tracy Carroll to help prepare actors, directors, and playwrights for the new play workshopping process! Play workshops are often the first step for new plays before they go to production, and it allows the playwright to get feedback on their work in the early stages. New play workshops are a big part of the Edmonton theatre scene, though the skills required to succeed aren't often taught in school. By offering this workshop, New Works hopes to provide students with a foundational knowledge of the new play workshop in order to prepare them for practical work they may engage with in the future!
Tracy Carroll has been a director, dramaturg, teacher and producer in Edmonton for the last 25 years. She is the Managing Director at Catalyst Theatre where she produced a successful Fall tour of The Invisible to Vernon BC, Saskatoon and Regina SK after a wonderful run at the Eva O Howard Theatre at Victoria School of the Arts in Edmonton. She has held leadership positions at theatres in the region including Co-Artistic Director at Concrete Theatre, Artistic Associate for Alberta Playwrights’ Network and Artistic Associate at the Citadel Theatre where she co-created and directed KidsPlay@ the Citadel. She has also led several new play development programs including Peep Show!, a tease of new plays at SkirtsAfire; Script Salon, a monthly play-reading series featuring Alberta plays; and EDMONten- A Showcase of Ten-Minute Plays. Tracy has been an advocate for playwrights and new work and was nominated for the Bra d’Or Award through Playwrights Guild of Canada- an annual award recognizing people who promote and support the work of Canadian women playwrights. She has facilitated the Young Playwriting Company and Young Production Company at the Citadel Theatre, teaches for Writes of Passage through Workshop West and has facilitated drama workshops at Teachers' Conventions for over 20 years. Most recently, Tracy Directed and Dramaturged The Space Between Stars by Christine Lesiak at SkirtsAfire, and Fresh Hell by Conni Massing at Shadow Theatre, and was the Assistant Director on the 2024 production of A Christmas Carol at The Citadel Theatre.

New Works Festival

Join the MacEwan Wildlife Club (A Chapter of The Wildlife Society) for our bee hotel workshop hosted by the Edmonton and Area Land Trust. This workshop will teach you about the importance of native pollinators, and you will get to build and take home your very own bee hotel! These bee hotels are a great way to promote native pollination in your garden, backyard, or wherever you choose to install them. 
 
The workshop will take place on January 10th from 3:00-6:00 pm in room 7-142 at MacEwan University. The event is welcome to all post-secondary students who wish to attend and purchase a ticket.
 
The event does require that you sign a waiver, as we will be working with power tools to complete this event (cordless drills). We ask that if you have safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection and/or a cordless drill, you bring these items. If you do not have access to these items they will be provided for you. 
 
Refunds will not be offered at this time.

New Works is hosting staged readings of our In-Development plays! This event provides the playwrights with public feedback and exposure for their works, allowing them to see how their play would function in front of a real audience.
For our In-Development series, New Works will be presenting sections of three plays:
The Sound of Rain written by Katelyn Cabalo and directed by Jeannine Kroening.
 Gawain written by Lily Davies and directed by Kalen Sabasch.
Corinthians written by Josh Greyvenstein and directed by Kaitlyn Stang.
Following the reading of each play, a talkback with the Playwright and Director will take place, allowing for feedback from the audience and insight into the writing process.
New Works' In-Development program takes plays that either were not developed enough for our mainstage program or would not function within our festival format and gives them an opportunity to receive mentorship, development, and exposure as staged readings. As directing for and acting in staged readings is a different experience than in fully produced performances, this allows for the building of valuable skills not often found within the University's curriculum.
