Learn the basics of watercolour painting. Each week, work on a technique and then a painting that uses these techniques. We will work with colour mixing, wet on wet, wet on dry, texture, layering, light and shadow in this 6-week class.

Wendy Meeres
I have always been an artist, from my youngest days to my current life. I now focus on making lampwork beads, jewelry from the beads and painting. I paint in watercolour, acrylics and mixed media. I also love to teach, what is better than sharing your passion and getting others to enjoy creating art and appreciating the arts.
My work celebrates colour and patterns found in the world around me. I am often inspired by my travels both close to home and around the world.

LPAC welcomes Say It Ain't So Theatre, presenting Carla Falk and Derek Olinek in "On A First Name Basis" for three nights in the SHUNDA Theatre!
Say It Ain’t So Theatre is proud to bring you this heartwarming and funny play written by Canada’s premiere playwright, Norm Foster.  A story about a successful, but reclusive spy novelist who discovers he knows nothing about his maid of 28 years.  She, however, knows everything about him.  This is a love story, social commentary, and a mystery wrapped in witty dialogue and vivid imagery. 

David, a successful novelist with writer's block, has received some devastating news he's kept to himself. Lucy, his housekeeper of twenty-eight years, has her own secret that she's afraid to admit. As Lucy is getting ready to end her shift, David invites her to stay and have a drink, curious about the woman who's been tending to his house all these years. But as the night sets in and the drinks start to flow, secrets reveal themselves, for better or worse.
Say It Ain’t So Theatre began in Edmonton in the 1990s.  One of the founding members, Carla Falk, brought the company to Red Deer in the early 2010s and, along with actors Fred Andersen and Tim Newcomb staged many successful productions of A Bench in the Sun throughout Central Alberta by catering to, and performing, primarily in rural community halls.  After taking a hiatus, Say It Ain’t So is proud to be relaunching with On A First Name Basis.

Carla FalkTheatre has been part of Carla’s life since she was a teenager.  She has appeared on stage in numerous productions for Central Alberta Theatre, Ignition Theatre, and Say It Ain’t So Theatre.  Acting credits away from the stage include commercials, series tv, and independent films.  As artistic director, Carla is pleased to be relaunching Say It Ain’t So Theatre with this fantastic Norm Foster play, On A First Name Basis.
Derek OlinekDerek has had roles in commercials and movies, but most of his acting credits over the last 32 years have been live theatre.  He has appeared on stage with Central Alberta Theatre, Ignition Theatre, Prime Stock, Theatre, and RD Players Breaking Cover series.  He is thrilled to be joining Say It Ain’t So Theatre’s production of Norm Foster’s hilarious and touching On A First Name Basis.

Beau Wheeler is a queer non-binary composer and singer based in Vancouver, Canada. Blessed with a set of pipes that would be the envy of Torch and Twang era kd lang or a young Robert Plant, Beau is about to release two new albums of music that capture the breadth and diversity of their musical vision. Theirs is a music that encompasses a wide spectrum of human experience. With songs that touch on love, loss and redemption, and an unflagging ability to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again, Beau, who recently came out to the world as trans, is one of Canada’s brightest lights and an artist to watch out for.
Their music pulls no punches as it shines a light on gender, surviving cancer, and the all too human experience of love in a way that turns the dark and sour stuff of life into something beautiful and hopeful. Beau’s songs remind us that ‘we’ve all been there’ and that no matter how low you are feeling that there’s hope. You’re not alone. Pain and joy form equal parts of life’s equation. The essential magic of Beau’s work lies in this unflinching ability to fearlessly open up and bring a room full of strangers together to share and heal from the vulnerabilities that we all feel.
Adrian Mack of ‘The Georgia Straight’ nailed it when he described Beau’s voice as ‘effortlessly big.’ A true force of nature, Beau’s singing tears down walls and dissolves barriers as they effortlessly channel all they’ve got into each syllable and phrase of every vocal performance. They can sweep from an incendiary roar to a barely audible whisper in the space of a breath. The thrill of immersing yourself in the work of an artist who has such a deep, natural sense of dynamic tension, counterpoint and emotional phrasing is difficult to communicate. Better to simply jump in and be taken on a journey through the unique sonic universe Beau creates in each of their songs.
Beau’s songs and life are inseparable. Experience and loss have forged an indomitably positive spirit that is most powerfully communicated in a live performance. If the essence of rock n roll is about taking the leap and risking everything to be yourself, Beau is certainly one of the most honest performers in popular music today. As a queer artist, they pull no punches as they risk everything in a ‘without a net’ high-wire act of a live show that has few equals. Beau’s musical roots go deep. As an artist whose grandfather played piano with Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr., they are aware that a good song is a good song, regardless of style and tempo.
Over the years, Beau has performed at the Vancouver Juno Awards (2018), recorded and toured with several of their own bands as well as contributing vocals to ‘A Small Wonder’ by A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers, and has shared the stage with many groundbreaking artists including Dan Mangan, Shane Koyczan and Tanya Tagaq.
Beau’s music is the light at the end of the tunnel, a message of hope in dark times. Whether performing solo in a one-room wooden church as part of ArtsWells or with their band ‘The Black Salt Sea’ in larger theatre settings, showcasing at Folk Alliance, or live-streaming for the Philadelphia Folk Society, vulnerable humanity exudes from everything Beau communicates. Bridges are crossed. Wounds are healed. Warm, immediate, and illuminating, the light Beau creates is one you want to bask in.

Author, Fran Kimmel, will be facilitating this event in what is sure to be an entertaining and inspiring evening.The evening will begin with introductions and Fran will interview Ali about her body of work and life as an Alberta writer. The guest of honour will read from some of her work followed by a Q&A period with the audience. We will end the evening with a book signing and networking in our lobby.

Artist Statement
I write for and about the people. I write about the what-ifs, the wtfs and the wait-a-minutes of every day. I write about the downtrodden, the broken-hearted, the vulnerable. About lovers and losers, mothers and mutineers. I write about prisoners with daddy issues, and sad auctioneers and single dads and feminist kids. I write about immigrant shopkeepers and big men in cargo shorts and old women soccer players and abusive grandpas. I write about me. I write you.
Juxtaposition and ambivalence influence the genre I use to tell story, so I write poems about wrestling and short prose about big men. Long form creative nonfiction to reveal tiny truths, full-length novels to document single days. Quick personal essays that burn slow. Other people’s memoirs.
My work is strongly influenced by philosophy, existentialism, cognitive psychology, biology, neuroscience and geography. Dialogue, humour and defamiliarization are my strengths. I write stories that aren’t about issues but exist because of them. Thematically, my work explores the art and horror of being human, and the grief of living and losing. Hope and despair are at the core of my storytelling. I write what rattles, arouses, enrages, enlightens, and disturbs me. I write about the fight to survive, the fight to exist, to be heard, to be understood, to be valued. To be. My priority as an artist is to challenge perspectives, generate connections and make people feel seen.
Writer Cathal Kelly says, “it’s the banalities, that when you string a few thousand of them together creates a life.” It’s also through the banalities that big ideas become accessible, universal, and relatable. So, my stories take place at karaoke competitions and estate sales and school playgrounds and my childhood home. I’m provoked by the mundane and the ordinary and pairing humor with pathos is a hallmark of my work. “It’s much easier to write a solemn book than a funny book. It’s harder to make people laugh than it is to make them cry. People are always on the verge of tears.” (Fran Lebowitz). I do both.
 
About Ali Bryan
Ali Bryan is an award-winning novelist and creative nonfiction writer who explores the what-ifs, the wtfs and the wait-a-minutes of every day. Her first novel Roost, won the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction and was the official selection of One Book Nova Scotia. Her second novel, The Figgs, was a finalist for the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour and has been optioned for TV by Sony Pictures. Her essays have been longlisted for the CBC Canada Writes Creative Nonfiction prize, shortlisted for the Alberta Literary Awards Jon Whyte Memorial Essay Award and nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She won the 2020 Howard O’Hagan Award for Short Story and is a Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Emerging Artist recipient. Her debut YA novel, The Hill, was released in 2021 and was longlisted for the 2021 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize. Her short-form work has been published in literary journals and magazines in Canada, the US and the UK and has longlisted for the 2022 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. She recently served as the Author in Residence at the Calgary Public Library and as the Edna Staebler Laurier University digital Writer-in-Residence. She has three novels forthcoming in 2023: The Crow Valley Karaoke Championships (Henry Holt), Coq (Freehand Books) and The City (Dottir Press). She lives in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies on Treaty 7 Territory, where she has a wrestling room in her garage and regularly gets choked out by her family.
Thrift shops, mixed martial arts, pigeons, bagpipes, mountains, books, ska, history, Survivor, graffiti, the Olympics, France, punk, tumbleweeds, the paintings of Kim Dorland and Jean Smith and the films of Wes Anderson are a few of her favourite things. Before turning to writing full time, Ali worked in marketing and communications, arts management and as a personal trainer.

The Track Junkies group is Alberta’s premium recreational lapping day experience, with a safe and welcoming environment for people with high-value street and track cars to come out and play.  Our events offer both competitive and noncompetitive high-speed lapping with coordinated (point-by) passing.
FORMAT:  We use a rotating run group format. These run groups allow drivers with similar skill levels, and cars with similar expected speeds, to run together with minimal congestion. Rotating sessions will be 20 minutes in length. Participants should expect 2+ hours of scheduled track time at this event.
INSTRUCTION is available for novice drivers.
TIME ATTACK: We are offering one competitive Time Attack run group at each event, with AMB timing transponders available for rent. Participants electing to run in a timed run group can accumulate points throughout the season and qualify for prizes and trophies at the end of the season.
SCHEDULE: This is a DAYTIME event.

- VALID DRIVERS LICENSE
- SAFE, TRACK-WORTHY VEHICLE INSPECTED IN ADVANCE OF THE EVENT. Please note the following:
- Trucks, SUV's, SAV's and other high center of gravity vehicles are NOT permitted. 
- Convertibles, cabriolets, and open-top cars must have structural rollover protection ... if you do not know what this means, please contact us BEFORE registering. Al list of convertibles with acceptable factory-provided roll bar protection can be found on our website at http://www.trackjunkies.ca/approved-convertible-list/.
- "Inspected in advance" means downloading the Track Junkies self-tech inspection form found at www.trackjunkies.ca/self-tech.pdf prior to the event and verifying the condition of each item on the form. Vehicles must be inspected separately for each event --- photocopies of previous inspections are not acceptable. The term "self-tech" means you may perform the inspection yourself if you have the required knowledge and tools. If you do not have the technical knowledge or tools required, or are not willing to take the time to properly inspect each item, please have the vehicle inspected by a licensed Automotive Service Technician with knowledge of the rigors expected in road course driving.
- BRAKE FLUID must be less than six months old on event date.
- HELMET:  Snell-approved M-2015 (motorcycle) or SA-2015 (motorsport) or newer helmets are required for all participants. ALL Snell-approved helmets bear a Snell rating sticker, typically found by lifting up the helmet liner (you should not need to remove any glued portions of the liner to view the sticker).  Open-face helmets are preferred in vehicles with air bags; closed-face helmets are preferred in vehicles without air bags. We have a limited number of open-face Snell-SA rental helmets available for Novice drivers.
- Novice drivers without track driving experience must take instruction (additional $105 fee) and complete a checkout ride before being permitted to solo. Unknown drivers without previous driving track experience in their profile will be placed in the novice run group and have an instructor assigned. 
- TIME ATTACK COMPETITORS must be pre-approved before they can register. Pre-approval criteria is outlined on our website at www.trackjunkies.ca/solo-driving-requirements/. Please send an email to info@trackjunkies.ca outlining your previous experience if you wish to be approved.

The Bellow Project: Dwennimmen and damn magpies

Featuring Dwennimmen, a.k.a. Shima Robinson: 2023 Edmonton poet laureate and author of the 2021 poetry collection, Bellow. With damn magpies (improvisation ensemble): Allison Balcetis (saxophones), Scott Smallwood (electronics), Mark Segger (percussion), Ian Crutchley (found objects), Chenoa Anderson (flutes), Jane Berry (voice)
The Bellow Project is a collaborative collection of spoken word poetry (written in 2021) and improvisational music featuring Dwennimmen (Shima Robinson) on words and damn magpies on other forms of sound. Together, Dwennimmen and damn magpies' work is called The Bellow Project.
Dwennimmen’s works consider narratives of decolonization, resistance, matriarchal influences, and warriorship. As an example, she spoke of the Maroon people of Jamaica, and the multicultural phrase, “out of many, one people.” The Bellow Project is an album with a spoken performance from Dwennimmen accompanied by musical improvisation from damn magpies, a local artist. In the event’s second poem, “Underbelly of An Origin Story,” Dwennimmen explores topics like decolonial nationhood, speaking truth to power, and growing into the awareness of being a guest on Indigenous lands. Rapid Fire Theatre is one of the biggest and longest running (since 1980!) producers of the show on the planet. This show features two acts. In the first act, our two Theatresports teams compete head-to-head. In the second act, the members of the winning team become rivals as they compete in a Maestro match, where only one performer will remain standing by the end!

Peter Heule, live animal supervisor at the Royal Alberta Museum started as a volunteer in the Bug Room back in 1998 and has been working for the museum ever since. A lifelong fascination with all animals led to years of experience keeping mammals, reptiles, amphibians and a wide range of invertebrates, a perfect fit for a person like Pete. He continues to share his passion for the more than 250 species of live animals that the RAM displays.
