The Ball’s Falls Thanksgiving Festival is a Niagara tradition, and this year, NPCA is excited to celebrate 50 years of heritage, culture and memories by making the 2024 festival bigger and better than ever!
Gather your family and friends and head to Ball’s Falls Conservation Area this Thanksgiving – there is something for everyone!
For the kids, there is endless entertainment and fun – including free face-painting, mini-train rides, and live birds-of-prey shows. For the adults, shop from over 150 vendors in the bustling craft and artisan market, treat yourself to delicious foods, sample some of the best local craft beers and wines, and listen to amazing live music on the main stage.
The whole family will enjoy exploring the 1800's heritage village, featuring one of Ontario’s oldest operating gristmills, and heading out on a guided nature hike to take in the bright fall foliage.

When Zainub Verjee, a Vancouver-based film programmer started the InVisible Colours women of colour film festival in 1988, she fully expected it to continue for years. So did Linda Abrahams (Matriart Journal) and Zanana Akande (Tiger Lily Women of Colour Magazine). Cutbacks, racism, and technological change decimated a sophisticated, world-changing feminist media movement. Long before the #MeToo era, feminist storytellers of the 1970s to 90s, from Halifax to Vancouver, took hold of cutting-edge analogue technology to document everything from violence towards women, to how to insert a diaphragm, amplifying many voices that had been missing.

 Creation in the LIVELab: Demo and Workshop

Featured artists-in-residence, Double Pendulum, will conduct a Saturday evening workshop in the LIVELab. They will showcase how mobile biosensing technology can be incorporated into creative performances and give a preview of their upcoming show, Synaptic Rodeo.
 
Seating is limited for the Workshop and can be reserved at the time of registration

How to Submit
Please submit an abstract (maximum 250 words) to the Microsoft CMT site on any topic related to perception, cognition, or performance of music and dance. Describe the motivation, methodology, results, and implications of your study. Theoretical contributions are welcome, provided that the connection to music perception and cognition is made clear.
Note: If you are unable to attend the conference in person, you are welcome to submit an abstract with the option of having the poster and a 3 minute explanatory video included virtually on the conference website.
The deadline for abstract submissions is September 23rd, 2024. 
Review Process
Each abstract will be reviewed by members of the scientific program committee. Early submission is encouraged as acceptance will be sent out on a rolling basis as submissions are received. All submissions will be notified of acceptance by October 7th, 2024.
Final Submission
 Upon acceptance, you will have the opportunity to upload a poster and a short ‘teaser’ video (30 seconds)that will be featured in a poster blitz session at the conference. Posters must be a maximum of 4’ x 4’ (122 x 122 cm). Virtual attendees will also have the opportunity to submit a 3-minute video describing their poster and a zoom link for chatting with participants. All posters (virtual and in-person) and other materials (e.g., videos) will be accessible for several months after the conference on the conference website.

LIVELab Presents Coszmos Quartette
Get ready for a memorable evening as CQ (Coszmos Quartette) unveils their latest album, Eternal Dawn, at the renowned McMaster LIVELab! Known for their captivating live performances, CQ will take listeners on a journey exploring themes of love, nature, and human connection. These songs are an act of love. They are a gift for those tired of irony and cynicism. Fronted by local luminary Bradley Germain (vocals/guitar), and featuring McMaster alumni Kate Quigley (piano/flute/vocals), Joel Banks (double bass), and Sara Froese (violin/vocals) along with Gareth Inkster (violin) and Noel Webb (drums) their harmonies and delicate arrangements take on vulnerability like it is a torch leading the way. Don’t miss your chance to witness this extraordinary performance in an intimate setting!Yet embracing the now is also to embrace its loss, to embrace just how fleeting our moments are. These songs pull us in, and then they end. Sweet voices swell and fade. Strings are plucked and they resolve. As our singer sings, blink and you’ll be gone, and then it's over. This is a gift. Without that gift time would lose its value. If life wasn’t finite, time would simply wash over us, endlessly, because nothing would be at stake, nothing would matter, nothing would be urgent. There would be no need to share these songs. There would be no need to be present and listen. I heard a wise woman say, if you want to see the Creator’s face, go into the natural world. This knowledge abounds in these songs. We are told to take our cues from clouds, from the movement of the sun, from the flight of birds. We are invited to pause and celebrate purple flowers on golden mornings. But be assured, this isn’t weakness or escape. It is strength. There is no fear in these songs. Their simplicity and directness declares their confidence, their knowing. They don’t need to overwhelm or impress with flash and virtuosity. Their harmonies and delicate arrangements take on vulnerability like it is a torch leading the way. To what? To love of course. If the now is all we have, what gives real meaning, real value, is love: Take some time to look around because there is so much to love. But this is only a seemingly naïve sentiment because, as the singer assures us, love is only easy, if you try. Love is a discipline, a practice. Synaptic Rodeo: an innovative theatrical performance where neuroscience, technology, and art collide. This groundbreaking performance, featuring Dr. Laurel Trainor, Founder and Director of the LIVELab, blends scientific exploration with artistic expression. As Dr. Trainor portrays herself, her insights on human consciousness transition fluidly into dynamic performances enhanced by EEG, motion capture, eye tracking and active acoustics. Synaptic Rodeo pushes the boundaries of mind and body using LIVELab's cutting-edge technology to forge new types of co-creation between artists and audience. Originally developed over a two-year residency, Synaptic Rodeo is being revived for 10th anniversary celebrations with exciting new additions, including eye tracking technology and an integrated research study. Witness the extraordinary collaboration of composer John Gzowski, choreographer Julia Aplin, media artist Jim Ruxton, and playwright Anna Chatterton. In this new iteration of the work, award winning and highly acclaimed director Evalyn Parry is joining the collaborative creative team of this immersive, interactive experience that redefines the intersection of science and art.

One-Day Workshop for ages 16+
Music and the responses it evokes in the brain and body can all be thought of as signals that vary over time. In this hands-on workshop, we will discuss how to measure and interact with these time-varying signals. Additionally, we will create our own musical interfaces using touch sensors and mobile eye-tracking glasses connected to programmable circuit boards!
Students will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of music cognition, digital signal processing, and computer programming from experts in the LIVELab. They will exercise creative autonomy in developing new musical interfaces and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to form multi-instrument ensembles.
