Join is again this St. Patrick's Day for a performance by Kelly Sloan and JIG. 
Kelly Sloan, the wonderful singer originally from Almonte, will be joining JIG for an evening of Irish music and song.  Kelly is now based in Toronto and has had a long and successful career performing and recording her own original songs, and that have been played many times on CBC radio.  However, her family and valley roots are rich in the Irish tradition.  Kelly has performed her Irish repertoire at Almonte’s Celtfest, and on multiple St. Patrick’s Days among others, and will be singing a choice selection of Irish ballads accompanied by JIG, who will also play instrumental selections of jigs, reels, polkas and more, from the Irish tradition.
The three members of JIG are among the best players of traditional celtic music in the region.  Those of you who know the local scene will already be familiar with the playing of James Stephens (fiddle/mandolin/ cittern), Ian Clark (guitar), and Greg Brown (fiddle/concertina, bouzouki). 
Get ready for a great night of real Irish folk music!

Nick Loyer is a Canadian bilingual singer-songwriter and producer. He is the co-founder and lead singer of Leverage for Mountains, an established band in Gatineau, Quebec. Kristen Martell is a singer-songwriter from Nova Scotia whose music transcends boundaries and connects deeply with her audience. Kristen Martell

Hailing from Boca Raton, FL, Maggie Baugh grew up studying classical music, writing songs and playing shows across Florida. At the age of 13, Baugh played the fiddle on “Devil Went Down To Georgia '' for a Charlie Daniels performance. This pivotal moment ignited a newly found love of Country Music for the young performer. Known for her viral singles including "Think About Me", and “Drinking to the Broken Hearts' ' Baugh gained her entry into the Spotify Million + Club. Baugh's social media prowess is immense. Her TikTok series, “Finish the Lick” shows off her proficiency on multiple instruments, which has garnered her more than 30 million views.
The Nashville music industry is showing its enthusiasm for her independent success, as she released her debut album, “Dear Me” this past October. The 14 song project, featured across multiple editorial playlisting including Spotify “Next From Nashville”, “New Music Friday Country”, Apple Music “New In Country”, “Fresh From Nashville” Amazon Music “Breakthrough Pop” and “Breakthrough Country” landed over 500K streams in its first day and reached #19 iTunes Country Album Charts. 
Most recently, Maggie caught the attention of Keith Urban who asked her to join him in 2024 as his utility player on tour.  In the past year, Maggie has appeared on CMT Awards, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, the Today Show and performed on stages from the Country Music Hall of Fame to Nissan Stadium. Canadian musician and instrument maker, Teilhard (tay-YAR) Frost specialises in traditional folk music with a focus on Appalachian old time music. 
He has spent the last twenty years touring with the sensational rag-time outfit Sheesham, Lotus, and ‘Son. Teilhard teamed up with Jason Mercer to record The Os project, a banjo & Saxophone based dance album. Frost & Mercer are also touring a new show, MojoBanjo, which is a loose musical history of the banjo. In 2020-24 Teilhard recorded and toured The Complete Recordings of Hezekiah Proctor with L'il Andy, Sam Allison and Brian Sanderson. Teilhard has also recorded and toured with Michael Duguay, Jenny Whiteley, Joey Wright, Chris Coole, and Michael Jerome Browne and done studio session work on over 75 albums and film scores. In the spring of 2024 he released his latest album Four and Twenty Blackbirds Dancing on a Deerskin, which includes players Tom Power, Scott Prouty, Chris Coole, and Jason Mercer.

Join us for an evening  of Celtic Music played by some of the best in the region. There will be a concert from 8pm to 10pm, with a jam to follow, so bring your instruments and get in on the fun.

Atlantic Firth
Karen Steven & Alastair MacDonald both hail from the far North of Scotland, where they grew up learning in the company of some well-known musicians such as Addie Harper (of The Wick Scottish Dance Band), Bobby Coghill and Ian Sinclair who led the folk group, Mirk.  The twinning of the Scottish Highlands with Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, in 1986, resulted in the two travelling to Cape Breton as part of a 3-week tour with high school group, The Caithness Junior Fiddlers.
 Scholarships to attend The Valley of the Moon fiddle camp in California, USA followed. It was there, KAREN was introduced to the phenomenal playing and teaching of; Alasdair Fraser, Buddy MacMaster, Martin Hayes (Ireland) and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh (Altan).  A 1997 scholarship from The Cross Trust, enabled Karen to return to Canada to carry out the research for her degree dissertation. Other opportunities have included, playing for former president of the USA, Bill Clinton, at Carnegie’s Skibo Castle in Scotland and teaching at Norway's mid-winter dance festival, Trondheim. Teaching opportunities followed, alongside Alasdair Fraser, at Celtic Connections festival, Glasgow and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye, as well as many appearances at The NAFCo festivals over the years.
Karen has a strong, rhythmic style of fiddle playing, influenced by her highland dance training.  She enjoys writing music for and playing for many Scottish dance styles including; Scottish Country dance, highland dance, highland dance choreography, stepdance and ceilidh dancing.
 ALASTAIR played regularly for dances across Scotland and the North of England with Addie Harper’s Scottish Dance Band for many years, but more recently supporting Scottish accordion champion, Brandon McPhee – on concert tours and CD recordings.  Since 2018, Alastair has been based in the Ottawa Valley region of Ontario, where he has collaborated with local band, Traditional Fare.  The band released their debut album in 2023, featuring 13 instrumental tracks on accordion, fiddle and bagpipes.
 In addition to playing accordion, Alastair has also been known to turn his hand to keyboards and piano playing.  He has a keen interest in sound engineering and collaborated with Karen back in 2021/2022 in the making of an international recording which was a fundraiser for a children’s hospital in Glasgow.  38 musicians from 4 countries took part in the project which raised $2000 for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.
 
Together, Karen and Alastair play a range of music influenced by their Scottish roots –strathspeys, reels, jigs, marches and airs – Scottish – Canadian – self composed, contemporary and traditional tunes.
 
IAN CLARK(guitar):  Originally from Scotland but living now in Ottawa, Ian has been accompanying traditional celtic music for over 25 years.  He plays concerts with folk and celtic performers and has made a number of commercial recordings with a variety of ensembles.  Since the Fall of 2022, Ian has been collaborating with Alastair & Karen, for concert sets as well as with their Scottish dance band, Atlantic Firth, for Scottish country dance events, in and around Ottawa and The Valley.
 
JOHN MITCHELL(piano): Karen & Alastair first met John, when he accompanied fiddler Anna Ludlow at a Red Bird Live show in 2022.  John is no stranger to the music performance scene and appears regularly at Ontario Fiddle & Stepdance contests, either as house pianist for competitors or competing on fiddle. John’s rhythmic approach to accompaniment suits the band’s style perfectly.  John describes his playing as one hand Cape Breton style, the other hand Ottawa Valley.

Bill FrisellBill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade”.Grammy nominated, his latest recording is entitled Orchestras released April 2024 on Blue Note. In the trio format he’s favored throughout his career, the guitarist and composer has always projected an orchestral scope — through his remarkably complete sense of harmony, a unique gift for melodies that remain with you long after a performance, and a keen feel for how dynamic range can be used to convey emotion. But on his new double album, his fourth release for Blue Note Records, he makes those symphonic evocations a reality. Produced by Lee Townsend, Orchestras documents two inspired concert-hall engagements arranged by Michael Gibbs for Frisell’s long-standing trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston: one featuring the nearly 60-piece Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Alexander Hanson; and one with the 11-piece Umbria Jazz Orchestra, under the musical direction of Manuele Morbidini.In March 2022, a biography on Frisell, entitled Beautiful Dreamer – The Guitarist Who Changed The Sound of American Music, written by Philip Watson was published by Faber and released in the UK, Europe, South, Central America & Asia. Through unprecedented access, and interviews with his close family, friends and collaborators, Philip Watson tells the story of the innovative and influential guitarist and composer. Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists and Meet the Composer, among others. From 2013 – 2015, Bill was Resident Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Roots of Americana series, and in 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors.Bill is also the subject of a documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth. He has also received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music.Rudy RoystonBorn in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Royston has been a professional teacher, drummer and percussionist for almost twenty years. He studied classical percussion at University of Denver where earned undergraduate degrees in Music and English, and accomplished teacher certification credentials from Metropolitan State College of Denver. Rudy grew up playing drums in church, and found his voice under the auspices of Colorado’s celebrated trumpeter Ron Miles, whom Royston deems his greatest influence, and with whom Rudy has played since 1991. He has taught, recorded and performed all styles of music from Jazz to marching percussion. Since moving to Piscataway, New Jersey in 2006, Royston has completed a Masters in Music degree from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and performed with many of today’s finest Jazz musicians. A lover of all genres of music, Rudy continues to pursue music and expand his music horizons.Thomas MorganThomas Morgan is a New York-based jazz double bassist from the San Francisco Bay Area. Known for his telepathic synchronicity, melodic and expressive phrasing, precise touch, and amber sound, he has performed alongside a number of the most trendsetting artists in jazz, including Bill Frisell, Jakob Bro, Craig Taborn, Masabumi Kikuchi, Paul Motian, Dan Weiss, Jim Black, John Abercrombie, Dave Binney, Steve Coleman, Ethan Iverson, Aaron Parks, Fred Hersch, Charles Lloyd, Henry Threadgill, and Tomasz Stanko, among manyothers.

On Home is a 50-minute interdisciplinary contemporary dance performance, exploring the journey of losing, seeking, and finding home.
This new work, collaboratively choreographed by the Voices Dance Project’s eight dancers, centers freedom and control, comfort and discomfort, displacement and rootedness, belonging and alienation to ask audiences: How do we reconcile our feelings of comfort and belonging in a place that is no longer safe for us? When we lose all that we know, how do we build again? Who are we when we emerge from the journey of leaving, seeking and finding home? What identities do we shed? What remains of us?
On Home is set to an original score by Ottawa-based composer Jack Hui Litster, performed live by Jack Hui Litster (percussion, electronics), Michelle Gott (harp), and Kathryn Patricia Cobbler (looping viola). It is the Voices Dance Project’s second full-length performance since its debut in October 2023.

Richard Bona is a Grammy-winning musician, one of the most accomplished international bass players, composers and multi-instrumentalists. With his unique sound and vocal gift he is continuously representing his African origins. Bona’s music addresses the continent’s traditions, culture, beauty and issues. Declared “the coolest rock star in the world right now,” by UNCUT magazine, Arooj Aftab has earned her position at the vanguard of creative music for her embrace of risk and nonconformity. In 2024, she released her fourth solo album, Night Reign (Verve), to universal acclaim, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album, while the song “Raat Ki Rani” was tabbed for Best Global Music Performance.The album expands on the musical universe Aftab has created over the years. Night Reign features an all-star cast of musicians (Cautious Clay, Vijay Iyer, Elvis Costello, James Franceis, Moor Mother, Joel Ross), united beneath the steady, brilliant hand of the queen of the night. As put by the Wall Street Journal, “[Night Reign’s] beauty is self-evident, and it stands on its own” which helps explain its inclusion across so many Best of 2024 album lists.Night Reign’s predecessor, Vulture Prince, ushered Aftab into the cultural zeitgeist, including a place on President Barack Obama’s Summer 2021 playlist. Recognition for the record propelled her to a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 2022 and a win for the song “Mohabbat.” The following year she collaborated with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on a “masterclass in space,” the improvisational Love in Exile (Verve 2023), also Grammy nominated and winner of a 2023 Edison Jazz award.Aftab spent her adolescent years in Lahore, Pakistan, the birthplace of her music-loving parents. (noise rock trio)CERAMIC DOG: Marc Ribot- guitar/vocals, Shahzad Ismaily- bass/moog/electronics, Ches Smith- drums/electronicsOn the band’s 5th studio release, Connection (July 2023), Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog have pushed their long-brewing tension between traditional pop songcraft and avantgarde improvisational music to the breaking point, bridging their customary genre-agnostic approach with elements of glam boogie, minimalist disco, psychedelic boogaloo, garage-punk-against-the-machine agitprop, and so much more. Recorded at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn, NY and mixed by Ben Greenberg (Danny Elfman, Depeche Mode, Lamb of God) the album sees Ribot – whose prodigious, impossible-to-categorize body of work as bandleader and musician spans no wave and jazz, Brazilian and Cuban music, roots and avant-garde and protest songs (often at the same time) alongside legendary collaborations with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Caetano Veloso, and Laurie Anderson (to name but a few) – continuing to utilize Ceramic Dog (with bassist Shahzad Ismaily of Arooj Aftab & Vijay Iyer’s Love in Exile, and drummer Ches Smith of Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, etc) as the vessel for his distinctive stream-of-consciousness songwriting, penning three out of the album’s four vocal tracks including the groove-infected “Ecstasy” (showcasing Anthony Coleman’s slinky Farfisa and longtime friend and associate Syd Straw behind the mic). From the anthemic manifesto “Soldiers in the Army of Love” to the unhinged ranting of “Heart Attack” and indescribable “No Name,” Ceramic Dog unleash a fury of complex time signatures, blues abstraction, and free-blowing energy to create their most unapologetically audacious collection thus far, their one-of-a-kind daring evidenced by the unlikely cover of Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz’s “That’s Entertainment,” written especially for the 1953 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film The Band Wagon but here, in Ribot and Co’s hands, deconstructs Hollywood cliches while simultaneously winking at both the post-punk and post-Cultural Revolution iterations of the Gang of Four. Arborialis has the natural world for inspiration and is designed to echo aspects of being lost in a forest – there are radiant canopies of leaves that stretch overhead, there are vibrant tree trunks rising from the ground beneath.

The Bros. Landreth welcomed a new day with Come Morning, an album that marked both a rebirth and refinement of the award-winning band's blend of North American roots music and harmony-heavy soul. The brothers embarked on a sold-out and near capacity tour of clubs and festivals across Canada, the US, Europe, and Australia, including stand-out performances at Byron Bay Blues Festival and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Come Morning earned the band its second JUNO, this time for Contemporary Album of the Year. Also in 2023, a banner year for the band, Joey and Dave became Grammy-winning songwriters when Bonnie Raitt’s cover of their song, Made Up Mind (from their first album, Let it Lie), earned the Grammy for Americana Performance of the Year. The cover was big news for the band as the lead single off her newest chart-topping album, spending 14 weeks in the number one spot on the Americana radio charts.  The most immersive, emotive record of the Landreths' career, Come Morning finds brothers Joey and Dave lacing their melody-driven songs with layers of atmospheric synth, organ, and textured guitar. The group's previous albums shone a light on their strength as a live act, capturing the spontaneity and sonic stomp of a band of hard-touring road warriors. If those records unfolded like snapshots of The Bros. Landreth's nighttime shows, then Come Morning sketches a markedly different picture, showcasing the introspection and clarity that comes with a long period of rest.  For Joey and Dave, rest wasn't always an easy thing to find. From their early days attending their father's gigs as babies ("Mom would take us in the bassinet and stick us under the bar tables," says Dave) to their years logged onstage and on the road, they've spent much of their lives being moved — both physically and emotionally — by music. After pursuing separate careers as sidemen, they launched The Bros. Landreth with 2013's Let It Lie, a debut album that drew upon the shared soundtrack of their childhood — Bonnie Raitt's blues, Little Feat's funky country-rock, Ry Cooder's eclectic instrumentals, Lyle Lovett's twangy traditionalism — for a sound that saluted the past while planting its flag firmly in the present. This was music for the heart and the heartland, with songs that evoked the American South one minute and the windswept prairies of the brothers' Manitoba homeland the next. Fittingly, the siblings spent years crisscrossing Canada and America in support of its release, then toured overseas as their popularity swelled.  Let It Lie won the 2015 JUNO Award for "Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year - Group;" earned The Bros. Landreth a nomination for "International Artist of the Year" at the 2016 UK Americana Music Awards; and received praise from heroes like Bonnie Raitt. (who later recorded her own version of the standout track "Made Up Mind" on her 2022 release, Just Like That…). Building a global audience took a toll on the brothers, though, and Dave temporarily stepped away from the lineup for three years. Joey used that time to launch a solo career, with albums like Whiskey and Hindsight cementing his reputation as a modern-day guitar hero. By the time the siblings reunited for their second album, '87, things had changed.  "When we decided to record a sophomore album for The Bros.," Joey explains, "it was fraught with confusion, resentment, and tension. Dave and I both desperately wanted to get back to making music together, but there was a lot to unpack."  '87 arrived in September 2019 and marked an expansion of the band's sound, but its accompanying tour was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Deflated, Joey and Dave found themselves back home in Winnipeg, riding out the lockdown by funneling their energy into a new batch of recordings. For years, they'd begun each album the same way: by assembling a band and playing together in the studio, allowing their live performances to form the foundation of each song. It was an approach that highlighted the chemistry they'd sharpened on the road, but it didn't always encourage exploration or intentionality. With Come Morning, things were different. Forced to keep a tight circle due to Covid restrictions, Joey and Dave worked together in near-seclusion, pulling long hours in the studio and building songs one instrument at a time. They recorded, layered, stripped away, and layered again. Sounds were sampled, re-sampled, and twisted into something new. Prioritizing moody textures over fiery fretwork, Joey took an understated approach to the guitar, saving his big solos for key moments. He placed an equal emphasis on keyboards, beefing up the recordings with Hammond organ and analog synth. Slowly, steadily, the Landreths pieced together a transportive album built for the heart, the head, and the headphones. This time, the songs weren't the only thing telling a story; the sounds told a story, too.  On "Stay," the two brothers — both of whom became first-time fathers shortly before Come Morning's creation — look for a balance between a touring musician's commitments to the road and a family man's priorities at home. "After the Rain," one of two songs co-written with Jonathan Singleton, finds them optimistically clinging to the silver linings that shine through the darkest of times, while "You Don't Know Me" mourns the loss of a friendship over achingly sparse percussion, soft swells of organ, and gorgeous pedal steel work from guest musician Joe Pisapia. With "Corduroy" and "Come Morning" — two songs about examining emotional damage to repair what's been broken — Joey and Dave even give a nod to their recent history of mending bridges.  "The overarching theme here is hope," says Joey, who shared production duties with longtime collaborator, Murray Pulver. "Many of these songs lean into the tough stuff, like processing emotional trauma and finding strength on the other side. It's a bit of a myth that you're ever done working on that. Dave and I have just begun the journey, and that's why this record represents the rebirth we wanted '87 to be. We're working through the pain, processing it, unpacking our baggage, and beginning to move forward. Last time, we were just walking on a rug that had all kinds of stuff swept under it."  Come Morning was a high watermark for The Bros. Landreth, featuring appearances from Leith Ross (whose 2020 debut was released on the Landreths’ record label, Birthday Cake) and drummers Aaron Sterling and Daniel Roy. At the album's core are the Landreths themselves: two born-to-collaborate brothers who sing songs about hard truths and new beginnings, having been brought back together during a time of unprecedented isolation.

Makaya McCraven is a prolific drummer, composer and producer. His newest album, In These Times, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. McCraven believes that the word “jazz” is “insufficient, at best, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with.” The artist, who has been aptly called a “cultural synthesizer”, has a unique gift for collapsing space, destroying borders and blending past, present, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and NPR, among other publications, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon. According to the New York Times, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality”. The artist explained to NPR in 2019, "I don't think what I'm doing is necessarily that far off of the legacy of jazz that I grew up in ... I think one of the things that gives it strength is that people want to argue over it. That's a good sign. That means there's life here."Born in Paris in the Autumn of 1983 to Hungarian singer and flutist Ágnes Zsigmondi and African-American expat jazz drummer Stephen McCraven, Makaya was raised in a vibrant, creative community in the Northampton, Massachusetts area, where his father often played with artists like saxophonist and ethnomusicologist Marion Brown, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, and saxophonist Archie Shepp, as well as a cadre of African Gnawa musicians. That scene, with its enticing blend of cultures, helped establish his philosophy around jazz as folk music. Meanwhile, his mother’s music blended Eastern European folk traditions, concurrently shaping his conceptions about the role of music in building and reflecting communities.“I'm really drawn to folk music. Music of aural tradition, music that is of the people where it's more of a collective experience of music and dance and culture that we all participate in and know as part of our being or as part of who we are.” He sees his work as a continuation of those traditions, noting, “I like to teach the music to musicians by ear, and hope even when I bring in more challenging rhythms, or difficult time signatures, I am able to do it in a way that is of the body and of the people of the earth in a way that’s not necessarily some intellectual experiment, but more something that's dealing with people.”While immersed as a youth in global folk traditions, he was also a child of the nineties, deeply influenced by sample-based hip-hop. He observed that jazz was sometimes perceived by his peers as “something that was old, corny, white... going to get you beat up.” This directly countered his own experience with the music: “That was such a strange idea to me, because the guys I grew up around were cool, and [weren’t] buttoned up like that.”Eventually he discovered bridges between jazz and hip-hop, including classic jazz records being sampled by hip-hop producers such as Pete Rock, and began to devote energy to “reappropriate this music to be what it is, what it means to me, and what it means for my people."After cutting his teeth in the Western Massachusetts music scene, co-founding a jazz-hip hop band called Cold Duck Complex that ultimately opened for The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and the Wu-Tang Clan, he and his partner (now wife, comparative race studies scholar Nitasha Tamar Sharma) moved to Chicago in 2006. McCraven soon found himself immersed in both the creative and straight-ahead jazz scenes, proving his versatility, and along the way finding a community that mirrored the pulsating scene that birthed him artistically. Within five years’ time, he’d established a name for himself, gigging alongside scene stalwarts like Willie Pickens, Marquis Hill and Jeff Parker.He first connected with the founders of Chicago’s International Anthem label in late 2011, and across 2012-2013 they hosted and recorded a series of improvised jazz nights featuring his combo at The Bedford, a club situated in what was once an old basement bank vault. McCraven took 48 hours of recordings and sculpted beguiling hip-hop beats, not unlike how Teo Macero looped and assembled Miles Davis’ On the Corner from improvised magic. At the time, McCraven thought of the project, which became the 2015 double LP release In The Moment, as an opportunity to connect and to “find a young audience in this music. It just felt like the right time and a place where I could really connect with people.” That notion proved prophetic: JazzTimes called the album “one of the year's most mesmerizing releases,” the record was an “Album of the Week'' pick by taste-making DJ Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Music, and it was chosen for “Best of 2015” lists by PopMatters, NPR, and the Los Angeles Times.McCraven continued to hone his process of live improvisation and sampling with Highly Rare in 2017 (crafted from a live set recorded at Danny’s Tavern in Chicago), 2018’s Where We Come From(CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape), which was built from recordings of a showcase at London’s Total Refreshment Centre, and Universal Beings (also released in 2018). Universal Beings, consisting of augmented live sessions in Chicago and New York, in addition to pop-up studio sessions in London and Los Angeles, concretely reflects his borderless multi-national ethos. The work featured varying configurations of international players, including Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings from London, Junius Paul and Tomeka Reid of Chicago, Anna Butterss and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson from Los Angeles, and Brandee Younger and Dezron Douglas from New York.The title of the album was culled from a sampled passage on the track “Brighter Days Beginning,”, in which percussionist Carlos Niño offers, “We’re universal beings,” a theme of borderlessness that resonated deeply with McCraven, who grew up in a multicultural household and community. “I’m not beholden to this border or this city,” McCraven told Vice in 2018, “What is a place? Other than the people. It’s just dirt, you know?” The resulting album was called “radiant” and “hypnotic” by Pitchfork.In 2019, McCraven both delivered a triumphant Jazz Night in America performance at South Shore Cultural Center in Chicago, and mounted a multimedia performance of an early iteration of what became his new album In These Times, at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis.In the meantime, he remixed Gil Scott-Heron’s final album (2010’s I’m New Here) for 2020’s We’re New Again: A Reimagining by Makaya McCraven, issued Universal Beings E+F Sides(also in 2020), and delved into the venerable Blue Note Records catalog in 2021 for Deciphering the Message, each project also employing new improvisations and sampling, helping to further cement his “beat scientist” moniker. Concurrently, the seeds for 2022’sIn These Times were budding, and their nurseries were stages around the globe. McCraven explains, “As I've been touring, I've been performing music off of the record In These Times... When In the Moment took off and I started touring a lot, we would go on the road and 50% of the music was just my concept and my compositions.”In These Times, a collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as McCraven’s personal experience as a product of a multinational, working class musician community, is the recording that McCraven has been trying to create for 7+ years, as it’s been slowly cooking in the background while his other works were released. He began recording In These Times seven years ago, but “for whatever reason, Universal Beings just came to fruition much quicker. It just took more time for this to mature into everything it's become. With the success of Universal Beings and the Universal Beings concerts that we did (with Red Bull) in Chicago at South Shore Cultural Center and le poisson rouge in New York, I had an opportunity to realize the record not as a collection of four sides of trios and quartets, but I turned that record as a performance into a 10 to 12-person concert, and that experience ended up evolving my approach to In These Times.” In These Times encompasses all he’s lived through, as well as his lineage, while also pushing the music forward. Music critic Passion of the Weiss suggested that “McCraven’s work, both with younger players and the sounds of older recordings, is part of a necessary conversation about the next evolution of the Black improvised music known colloquially as ‘jazz.’ He’s found the threads connecting the past with the present, and is either wrapping them with new colors and textures, or he’s plucking them gleefully like the strings of a grand instrument.” McCraven concurs: “To me, that is the tradition that I want to try to take part in. Being well-rooted, but walking into the future, is really what all of the leaders in this music have done that I admire. And I think that resonates with people. Bill FrisellBill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade”.Grammy nominated, his latest recording is entitled Orchestras released April 2024 on Blue Note. In the trio format he’s favored throughout his career, the guitarist and composer has always projected an orchestral scope — through his remarkably complete sense of harmony, a unique gift for melodies that remain with you long after a performance, and a keen feel for how dynamic range can be used to convey emotion. But on his new double album, his fourth release for Blue Note Records, he makes those symphonic evocations a reality. Produced by Lee Townsend, Orchestras documents two inspired concert-hall engagements arranged by Michael Gibbs for Frisell’s long-standing trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston: one featuring the nearly 60-piece Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Alexander Hanson; and one with the 11-piece Umbria Jazz Orchestra, under the musical direction of Manuele Morbidini.In March 2022, a biography on Frisell, entitled Beautiful Dreamer – The Guitarist Who Changed The Sound of American Music, written by Philip Watson was published by Faber and released in the UK, Europe, South, Central America & Asia. Through unprecedented access, and interviews with his close family, friends and collaborators, Philip Watson tells the story of the innovative and influential guitarist and composer. Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists and Meet the Composer, among others. From 2013 – 2015, Bill was Resident Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Roots of Americana series, and in 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors.Bill is also the subject of a documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth. He has also received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music.Rudy RoystonBorn in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Royston has been a professional teacher, drummer and percussionist for almost twenty years. He studied classical percussion at University of Denver where earned undergraduate degrees in Music and English, and accomplished teacher certification credentials from Metropolitan State College of Denver. Rudy grew up playing drums in church, and found his voice under the auspices of Colorado’s celebrated trumpeter Ron Miles, whom Royston deems his greatest influence, and with whom Rudy has played since 1991. He has taught, recorded and performed all styles of music from Jazz to marching percussion. Since moving to Piscataway, New Jersey in 2006, Royston has completed a Masters in Music degree from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and performed with many of today’s finest Jazz musicians.
