Each month Bluegrass Wednesdays begins with a 2 hour concert followed by a jam session.

Bluegrass Wednesdays ft. The Dusty Drifters

Jason Wilson is a two-time Juno Awards Nominee, Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee, Canadian Reggae Music Award Winner, bestselling historian and television personality. Born to Scottish immigrants, Wilson grew up in Downsview, Ontario and has since amassed over 2,000 performances across North America, the UK and the Caribbean. He has performed and recorded with UB40, Alanis Morissette, Sly & Robbie, Pee Wee Ellis, Jackie Mittoo and Martin Carthy. Jason was also one half of the Wilson & Swarbrick project with the late English folk icon Dave Swarbrick (Fairport Convention). An Adjunct-Professor of History at the University of Guelph, Dr. Wilson is the author of eight books including the OHS’s Joseph Brant Award Winner King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: The Roots and Routes of Canadian Reggae (UBC Press, 2020) and the national bestseller The Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club (McClelland and Stewart, 2016). Wilson is also a recurring expert on various television programmes (CBC, Discovery, TSN, NatGeo, ESPN and NBCSN) and lives with his wife Alana and an assemblage of furries in Stouffville, Ontario.

Join us for an evening  of Celtic Music played by some of the best in the region. There will be a concert from 8pm to 10pm, with a jam to follow, so bring your instruments and get in on the fun.
The Women of Fiddle are a fresh, energetic and versatile group who can set the tone for an up close, intimate performance or scale things up to entertain audiences in any type of venue. Celebrating the influence of women in fiddle for generations and influenced by many different genres of music, this highly skilled quartet highlights the diversity of fiddle music within Canada by playing traditional music and dance from our past and present. The quartet are: Anna Ludlow from the Toronto production of “Come From Away”, Karen Steven, fiddle teaching champion and recording artist from Scotland, Terri-Lynn Mahusky who is a champion fiddler and step dancer from Renfrew, ON and fiddler/pianist Sherryl Fitzpatrick from Ottawa, ON. In addition to their tasteful selections, their show wouldn’t be complete without highlighting their beautiful voices singing songs from their native provinces. They take you on a journey down memory lane by playing lively jigs and reels from the East Coast of Canada and Scotland, music from the Don Messer Days and Quebecois all music from their heritage.

Gee-Gees Basketball (F/W)

Otis Strange is an original Canadian Rock band that formed in 1992 in Ottawa, Ontario. The name derives from a line in Shakespeare’s Hamlet “O’tis strange the night…” The band’s present-day style is an eclectic funky acoustic vibe with a percussive twist, which they define as ‘Urban Roots Rock’. The members are (from left to right)  Dave MacLachlan (Mug) on lead vocals, Jonny Olsen (Jonny O) on drums, Nelson Hursti (Nelly) on guitar and Dave Matsukubo (Kubo) on bass.  As of September 2024, the band has added a fantastic new member, Heather Birchard (Asia) on lead and backup vocals.Opening the show will be a longtime friend of the band, Marcus Maidment. Both Marcus and OTIS STRANGE will be focussing on original acoustic material for the evening.

The Grapes Of Wrath: unplugged
After bonding over a mutual love of The Beatles, drummer Chris Hooper introduced Kevin Kane to his younger brother Tom Hooper in 1977. While still attending elementary and junior high school in Kelowna BC, the trio began learning to play their instruments together during regular Friday night jam sessions in the basement of the Hoopers’ suburban home.
 Influenced in equal parts by the British Invasion of the 60s and the DIY attitudes and immediacy of punk and new wave, the group took the name The Grapes Of Wrath in 1983, and began working on the songs that would make up their debut EP (The Grapes of Wrath, 1984) and first album (September Bowl Of Green, 1985), both of which were released by Vancouver indie label Nettwerk Productions. The band were soon signed by Capitol/EMI for albums “Treehouse” (1987), “Now And Again” (1989), and “These Days” (1991). These records spawned some of the most well-known Canadian songs of the 80s and 90s, including Peace Of Mind, Backward Town, All The Things I Wasn’t, What Was Going Through My Head, I Am Here and You May Be Right. Thanks in no small part to the support of MuchMusic, the Grapes enjoyed gold and platinum sales, with sold out shows at home in Canada, extensive radio play, and several US and European tours in support of albums that also saw release in Japan, Australia, and South America. Amid mounting tensions in the band, the group disbanded in 1992 at the height of their career.
Tom and Kevin resurrected the Grapes in the late 90s, subsequently releasing the album “Field Trip” (2000) on the Song Corp label, and reuniting for another series of acoustic duo shows in the summer of 2009 to celebrate their enduring friendship and the music they had written. The following year, an offer from a festival for a full band reunion led to the return of drummer Chris, and the original three recorded “High Road” (2013) - their first album of new material in almost 22 years - named after the street the Hoopers had lived on when they first started playing together as kids. They have been playing regularly ever since and are arguably the longest-running, still-active “original lineup” in rock.
This year, Tom and Kevin are once again hitting the road as a duo to perform The Grapes’ music in an intimate and unplugged setting, telling the stories behind the songs and putting the focus on the harmonies and melodies of their timeless music.

Declared “the coolest rock star in the world right now,” by UNCUT magazine, Arooj Aftab has earned her position at the vanguard of creative music for her embrace of risk and nonconformity. In 2024, she released her fourth solo album, Night Reign (Verve), to universal acclaim, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album, while the song “Raat Ki Rani” was tabbed for Best Global Music Performance.The album expands on the musical universe Aftab has created over the years. Night Reign features an all-star cast of musicians (Cautious Clay, Vijay Iyer, Elvis Costello, James Franceis, Moor Mother, Joel Ross), united beneath the steady, brilliant hand of the queen of the night. As put by the Wall Street Journal, “[Night Reign’s] beauty is self-evident, and it stands on its own” which helps explain its inclusion across so many Best of 2024 album lists.Night Reign’s predecessor, Vulture Prince, ushered Aftab into the cultural zeitgeist, including a place on President Barack Obama’s Summer 2021 playlist. Recognition for the record propelled her to a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 2022 and a win for the song “Mohabbat.” The following year she collaborated with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on a “masterclass in space,” the improvisational Love in Exile (Verve 2023), also Grammy nominated and winner of a 2023 Edison Jazz award.Aftab spent her adolescent years in Lahore, Pakistan, the birthplace of her music-loving parents. Her viral cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at age 18 aided in her passage to study jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston, while Brooklyn, New York would be her next and most fertile workshop for creation of her genre-defying music.Over the last few years, she has delivered “rapturous performances” at major venues and international festivals including Primavera, Glastonbury, Coachella, Le Guess Who? (which she curated), and both Newport and Montreal Jazz. She has appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk, Later with Jools Holland, Brodie and Mahogany sessions. Aftab has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Financial Times, The Quietus, and Time, to name a few. She is a 2023 United States Artists Fellow and recipient of the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music.

Madeleine Roger (she/her) is a singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada. While skillfully accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her lyrical prowess with breathtaking melodies that linger long after they are sung.
Her second album Nerve (out August 2024 on Birthday Cake Records) is a deeply personal body of work examining every nook and cranny of love and loss. It was produced by Josh Kaufman (Anaïs Mitchell, Bob Weir, Bonny Light Horseman) and explores a breakup with a long-term lover and musical collaborator, the death of a soul-friend, the secret of an unrequited love, months of caring for a dying grandparent, and finding a curious peace in spite of it. 

 
Campbell Woods - He sings soft songs about hard luck. Writing songs rooted in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, his style is tried and true, but he’s no dinosaur. You’ve heard it all before, but not like this.

(noise rock trio)CERAMIC DOG: Marc Ribot- guitar/vocals, Shahzad Ismaily- bass/moog/electronics, Ches Smith- drums/electronicsOn the band’s 5th studio release, Connection (July 2023), Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog have pushed their long-brewing tension between traditional pop songcraft and avantgarde improvisational music to the breaking point, bridging their customary genre-agnostic approach with elements of glam boogie, minimalist disco, psychedelic boogaloo, garage-punk-against-the-machine agitprop, and so much more. Recorded at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn, NY and mixed by Ben Greenberg (Danny Elfman, Depeche Mode, Lamb of God) the album sees Ribot – whose prodigious, impossible-to-categorize body of work as bandleader and musician spans no wave and jazz, Brazilian and Cuban music, roots and avant-garde and protest songs (often at the same time) alongside legendary collaborations with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Caetano Veloso, and Laurie Anderson (to name but a few) – continuing to utilize Ceramic Dog (with bassist Shahzad Ismaily of Arooj Aftab & Vijay Iyer’s Love in Exile, and drummer Ches Smith of Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, etc) as the vessel for his distinctive stream-of-consciousness songwriting, penning three out of the album’s four vocal tracks including the groove-infected “Ecstasy” (showcasing Anthony Coleman’s slinky Farfisa and longtime friend and associate Syd Straw behind the mic). From the anthemic manifesto “Soldiers in the Army of Love” to the unhinged ranting of “Heart Attack” and indescribable “No Name,” Ceramic Dog unleash a fury of complex time signatures, blues abstraction, and free-blowing energy to create their most unapologetically audacious collection thus far, their one-of-a-kind daring evidenced by the unlikely cover of Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz’s “That’s Entertainment,” written especially for the 1953 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film The Band Wagon but here, in Ribot and Co’s hands, deconstructs Hollywood cliches while simultaneously winking at both the post-punk and post-Cultural Revolution iterations of the Gang of Four. In their almost two-decade history, the Grammy-nominated band Kneebody has created a genre and style all its own. Their sound is explosive rock energy and high-level nuanced chamber ensemble playing set within the frames of highly wrought compositions that are balanced with adventurous no-holds-barred improvising. Kneebody is keyboardist Adam Benjamin, trumpeter Shane Endsley, saxophonist Ben Wendel and drummer/bassist Nate Wood. The band has no leader or rather, each member is the leader; they’ve developed their own musical language, inventing a unique cueing system that allows them each to change the tempo, key, style, and more in an instant.The group met in their late teens while at The Eastman School of Music and Cal Arts, became fast friends, and converged together as Kneebody amid the vibrant and eclectic music scene of Los Angeles in 2001. Since then, each band member has amassed an impressive list of credits and accomplishments over the years all while the band has continued to thrive and grow in reputation, solidifying a fan base around the world.In 2005, Kneebody released their debut self-titled album Kneebody on Dave Douglas’ Greenleaf Music Label. Low Electrical Worker followed in 2007 on the Colortone Label. A collection of 13 original songs, Low Electrical Worker was hailed by saxophonist Joshua Redman as one of his “favorite albums of 2007.”In the spring of 2009, Kneebody and vocalist Theo Bleckmann released 12 Songs of Charles Ives on the Winter & Winter label and received a GRAMMY nomination in the “classical crossover” category. 2013 saw the release of The Line for Concord Records. In 2015, Kneebody's groundbreaking collaboration with electronic musician Daedelus on Kneedelus was released on Flying Lotus’ imprint Brainfeeder records to praise from critics and audiences alike. In 2017, Motéma Music released Kneebody’s Anti-Hero. 2019 brought back-to-back releases from Kneebody on Edition Records. In the Spring, they released By Fire, an EP featuring an eclectic selection of covers from John Legend to Soundgarden. Followed by the Fall release of Chapters, the group’s first full-length album as a quartet, mixing deep grooves and deft melodies with a wide range of guests including Becca Stevens, Gretchen Parlato, Michael Mayo, Gerald Clayton and Josh Dion.

Daddy's Issues est une pièce bilingue qui explore le deuil d’un parent encore en vie. Lors d’un déménagement dans son nouvel appartement, Anaïs découvre l’ancien téléphone de son père caché dans l’une des boîtes. Au travers d’un récit qui se tisse entre monologue et scènes entre deux amoureuses, les circonstances de la disparition du père d’Anaïs devient de plus en plus claire. Et compliquée! Un pied dans son enfance et l’autre pris dans un Iphone 4 avec l'écran craqué, Anaïs devra réparer les ruptures de son enfance pour pouvoir enfin se sentir complète. Cette pièce est une lettre d’amour pour ceux qui choisissent de rester, à la complexité de la condition de mère transféminine, mais surtout, c’est une lettre d’amour envers les fractures profondes des enfances trop courtes.
Ce spectacle bilingue (français/anglais) refuse de privilégier une langue au détriment de l'autre. Il remet en question les normes de séparation linguistique et, au contraire, embrasse le chaos familier des nos oralités.

Daddy's Issues is a bilingual play that explores the grief of losing a parent who is still alive. While moving into her new apartment, Anaïs discovers her father’s old phone hidden in one of the boxes. Through a narrative that weaves between monologue and scenes between two lovers, the circumstances of Anaïs’s father’s disappearance become increasingly clear—and complicated! With one foot in her childhood and the other stuck in an iPhone 4, Anaïs will have to mend the fractures of her past to finally feel whole. This play is a love letter to those who choose to stay, to the complexity of trans girl motherhood, but above all, it is a love letter to the deep fractures of childhoods that end too soon.
This bilingual show (French/English) refuses to belong to one language over another. It challenges norms of linguistic separation and, instead, embraces the familiar chaos du real way qu'on se parle.

Dans un seule-en-scène, une femme a peur de mettre au monde une fille. Elle se questionne sur les origines de cette peur, comment devient-on une femme ? Par les seins se rappelle-t-elle à ses 11 ans.
Le désir d’avoir des seins et leur absence, les modèles de féminité dans les journaux, à la télé, dans la société, cristallisent cette croyance. Elle nous emmène alors avec elle dans sa quête. Cette quête des seins est un prétexte pour plonger dans l’imaginaire culturel, tout ce qu’on ingurgite sans en prendre conscience, et qui en dit long sur la société dans laquelle on grandit, et qui influence jusqu’à notre intimité, notre rapport à la chair, à la sexualité, la relation à l’autre.
Entre le stand-up et drame théâtral, la parole brise le quatrième mur et se veut directe et authentique.

Presented as a solo-performance, a woman is afraid to give birth to a daughter. She questions the origins of this fear—how does one become a woman? She remembers her breasts at the age of 11. 
The desire for breasts and their absence, the models of femininity in magazines, on TV, in society, crystallize this belief. She then takes us on a journey with her. This quest for breasts becomes an excuse to dive into the cultural imagination, all the things we ingest without realizing it, which reveal a lot about the society in which we grow up and influence even our intimacy, our relationship to the body, to sexuality, and to others.
Between stand-up and theatrical drama, the text breaks the fourth wall and aims to be direct and authentic.
