Taylors Story - A Tribute to Taylor Swift at Brockville Arts Centre


Aberdeenshire folksinger, Iona Fyfe, has become one of Scotland’s finest singers, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. In 2021, she became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. Iona is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language, leading a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into recognising Scots and add it to its list of languages. Honoured at the Scots Language Awards with the title of Speaker of the Year in 2021, Iona performs both folk and pop songs in the Scots language, remaining true to her rooting in tradition. Iona has featured in several publications including The Sunday Post, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Times. She won the title of Scots Singer of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards in 2018 and was described as “one of the best Scotland has to offer.”  (Global-Music.de)
Iona has made musical appearances on several TV broadcasts including Landward (BBC Scotland), Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4) Secret Scotland with Susan Calman (Channel 5), Binneas Na Trads (BBC ALBA), Under Canvas (BBC ALBA), Hame (BBC Northern Ireland) and Great Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo (BBC Two). Her music has received airplay and has been performed in session on radio shows such as Music Planet (BBC Radio 3), The Folk Show (BBC Radio 2) The Afternoon Show, Take The Floor and Travelling Folk (BBC Radio Scotland).
With extensive touring experience, Iona, a mere 23 years of age, has performed throughout the UK, Poland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic, Canada and Australia. Iona has performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as part of the World Premiere of Disney Pixar’s Brave in Concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Released in 2019, Dark Turn of Mind is Iona’s first EP entirely in English and features six ballads and songs found in both Appalachia and Aberdeenshire and has been described as “a new interpretation to the country genre” – Maverick.
Iona studied at the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and graduated with a first-class honours degree in Traditional Music and holds an FLCM from London College of Music. A finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2021, Iona has achieved sell-out shows at Edinburgh Fringe Festival for three consecutive years. A familiar face on the UK folk club circuit, Iona is just as much at home in an unaccompanied singing setting, as she is with full band line-up. Performing at Interceltique Festival De Lorient in France, she was described as “a Scottish folksinger, magical and charismatic” (Rolling Stone, France)..
Iona is a regional member of the Musicians Union’s Scotland and Northern Ireland branch. She serves as a director of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland. In 2020, Iona helped to found Oor Vyce, the campaign group dedicated to securing official recognition of the Scots Language and lobbied 35 out of 129 MSPs to sign a Scots Pledge, which would seek to secure protection, funding and promotion of the language that over 1.5million people speak. (2011 census). Iona is a passionate supporter of the statutory recognition of the Scots language. Iona has spoken out against sexual harassment and champions equality within the music industry. She has also discussed fair pay for music streaming and the effect of Brexit on live touring. Iona appeared on BBC News, interviewed by Victoria Derbyshire about implications that Brexit has caused for touring musicians.
Growing up within the Traditional Music and Song Association movement, Iona met many revivalist singers such as Jimmie Hutchison, Joe Aitken and Carole Prior who influenced her ballad and bothy ballad style. Attending singarounds, ceilidhs and competitions from 5 years of age, Iona learnt her repertoire mainly through oral transmission and is still a regular within the competitive ballad circuit.
Iona’s debut album Away From My Window was held to critical acclaim and received nationwide airplay on programmes such as BBC Radio 2 The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk, Take The Floor and BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal. An exploration of her unique style and songwriting voice, Away From My Window features archive material of singers such as Stanley Robertson and Lizzie Higgins whilst drawing on the work of more recent songmakers such as Michael Marra and Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap). “Away From My Window” was premiered at a sold out Celtic Connections performance featuring a larger musical ensemble and live on-stage sampling of source singers.

FRASER
Ernie Fraser is a professional fiddler and guitarist from Cape Breton Island. He began his musical career as a guitarist specializing in Blues, R&B and Jazz. Later, he developed a keen interest in fiddling, particularly that of Cape Breton.
Ernie was a top ten finalist for the 2021 Canadian Grand Masters’ Fiddling Competition. He was heavily involved with the Ottawa Traditional Fiddling and Folk Art Society for many years. Ernie is a sought after performer to play for local Cape Breton dances, typically hosted by the Cape Breton Club of Ottawa and Watson’s Mill in Manotick. His CD, entitled Cape Breton Tributes, is distributed by a number of organizations. Ernie’s website is https://erniefraser.ca.
Ernie is joined by Marietta Fraser, a multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar, fiddle and banjo), and by Diane Fraser on bodhran and vocals. Together, they are called FRASER, and they have performed around the Ottawa and Gatineau area; most recently at Hogman-Eh! 2024 and Robbie Burns Day events hosted by the Scottish Society of Ottawa, the Almonte Celtfest (2018 and 2022), and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, as well as private events.

Alexis MacIsaac and Calum MacKenzie are a wife and husband duo who have established a unique musical partnership that combines Cape Breton piano playing with a modern approach to Celtic fiddle. While Calum’s musical approach has been heavily influenced by his Hebridean roots and his native Cape Breton culture, Alexis’ playing is a multi-faceted harmonization of Irish, Scottish, and Cape Breton styles.
Though their respective approaches to music are distinct, together they create a clean and seamless sound that is nonetheless grounded in tradition. As a fiddle player, Alexis has performed throughout North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates with acts such as Riverdance, The High Kings, and The Paperboys, while Calum has been fortunate to play with, and accompany, many local Cape Breton artists and international musicians both at home and abroad in the Caribbean and in Scotland on piano and fiddle.
Their debut album, The Bay Street Sessions, is a compilation of original and traditional compositions and arrangements, and secured them a 2017 Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for traditional instrumental group of the year and a 2018 East Coast Music Awards Nomination for Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year. The album is infused with centuries-old feeling and contemporary flair: their mutual love for music articulated in each note and phrase from bow to key.
 

Celtic Celebration Featuring Alexis MacIsaac & Calum MacKenzie and Fraser

To call Laura Cortese a globetrotter would be to drastically understate her adventurous spirit. Her nature, as a musician, has always been to go where the wind takes her, settling into new ecosystems in which to adapt and grow roots until the breeze blows once more. In these travels, she has found a global network of collaborators–friends and mentors who have helped her forge bonds and grow mastery in many musical traditions, all of which she approaches with the same reverence and devotion that she felt when picking up a fiddle for the very first time as a young child.Now, more than twenty years into her already impressive career, she makes her home in Ghent, Belgium, where she continues to do what she is best at: building musical community. Despite a global pandemic and rolling lockdowns, Laura Cortese created opportunities for local creatives to come together, sharing space and inspiration with each other in every gathering. In so doing, she was inspired to create a new solo show based on original American folk songs. When Laura is alone on the stage, the audience becomes her band, stamping and clapping like a kick and snare drum, sometimes singing along sweetly and occasionally reminiscent of an enthusiastic gang vocal. She can be found performing internationally, exploring, and exalting in her passion for American roots music.

JIIG came into being in 2004 when singer, songwriter and concertina player Ian Robb decided to record a long overdue “solo” album, and realised he didn’t have to look very far in his home town of Ottawa for some really top-notch help. The solo album quickly evolved into a group project, and the pre-existing trio of James Stephens, Ian Clark and Greg T. Brown, then known acronymously as JIG, took on a fourth member and a second “I”.
The music of JIIG centres around Ian R’s masterful singing of traditional or traditional-sounding, mostly English songs, and is balanced by some stellar instrumental sets showcasing the various stylistic influences and uncommon musicianship of James, Ian C and Greg, all leading lights of the vibrant Ottawa Celtic scene . The band finds its tunes in the Québec, Ontario, Newfoundland, Appalachian, Scottish, Irish and English repertoires, or among James and Greg’s own compositions, and produces a sound that is at once rich and rhythmic, eloquent and edgy. The band's first (and only) recording project, simply entitled "JIIG" received two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations in 2005, and Ian R. won the CFMA for "Best singer, Traditional"
 
James Stephens
Perhaps best-known as a record producer (Finest Kind, Pierre Schryer, Glen Road, Genticorum, The Brian Pickell Band and countless other artists in the folk/acoustic genre; winner of the 2003 Porcupine Award as “Producer of the Year”), James is one of Canada’s most versatile and inventive fiddle players, mastering a multitude of styles from Cape Breton to Bluegrass, Québecois to Appalachian Old Time, Irish to Ottawa Valley. James works his way through 4 and 5 string fiddles, mandolin and bass in the course of a JIIG performance. He has played with a Who’s Who of Canadian folk roots music, from Fat Man Waving to Lynn Miles to Finest Kind, and had a previous life in classical music. In recent years, James has made many trips to Smithers BC to teach and compose for the Valley Youth Fiddlers’ project, and is also one of the organisers of the Gatineau Hills Fiddle Festival, in his home community of Chelsea, QC.
 
Ian Robb
A founder member of the Estelle Klein Achievement Award-winning Friends of Fiddler’s Green, and a third of the internationally acclaimed vocal harmony trio Finest Kind, Ian, who describes himself as “a singer and writer of old songs” is one of North America’s most respected singers of English traditional song, with a singing career spanning more than 50 years. He bought his first English concertina in the 1970s, and over the decades has gradually developed his own distinctively chordal style of song self-accompaniment. Ian has been a long-time builder and advocate of the folk music scene; he co-founded the Old Sod Folk Music Society of Ottawa, served several years as a regular columnist for Come for to Sing and Sing Out! Magazines, and has been a board member of the Canadian Folk Music Society and Canadian Vice-President of Local 1000, the travelling musicians’ union. More recently Ian has toured and recorded with the English duo Jess and Richard Arrowsmith as The Arrowsmith:Robb Trio, and his last recording was a duo project with JIIG’s James Stephens. Ian’s recordings go back to 1976, and total well over a dozen solo and band projects.
 
Ian Clark
A solid grounding in swing guitar has given Ian a seemingly unlimited chord vocabulary and a great sense of groove that he exploits fully in his playing with JIIG. Though brought up in Scotland, his passion for “Celtic” playing only developed when he discovered Ottawa’s session scene, and he soon became a favourite among that city’s many great players, adding a mastery of DADGAD tuning to his already broad palate. Ian has played with Canadian fiddle great Pierre Schryer, and Ian and Pierre’s live duo CD “Heat of the Moment” is a classic showcase of uninhibited and inventive duet playing. He has also performed in the last few years with the Friends of Fiddler’s Green, has played and recorded with Finest Kind, among others. and is a member of The Ottawa rockabilly and swing band, The Dimestore Playboys.
 
Greg T. Brown
Fiddle and accordion alumnus of many bands including Matapat, Tüq and Glen Road,. Greg is originally from Newfoundland, and cut his musical teeth on the tunes of Rufus Guinchard and Emile Benoit under the guidance of current Newfoundland fiddle great Christina Smith. Since moving to the National Capital region and for a while, Montreal, he has added a variety of styles to his tune repertoire, most notably from the Irish and Québecois traditions. He has also added accordion, anglo concertina, tenor banjo and guitar to his arsenal. Greg is in demand around Ottawa’s music scene as a fine live sound engineer, and in recent years he has made countless trips north to Nunuvut, to teach fiddle and accordion and work his magic at the mixing board.

The interesting parts of our stories aren’t the famous people we meet… 
Or the times when everything is basically working. Or when we get to lay in comfort with a partner watching Netflix and the world go by. The interesting parts are when all those things break down and you’re left in isolation to finally deal with the roots of whatever had been thwarting your existence all along. The interesting parts are when the world has turned its back on you and you have turned your back on it or them. When darkness could seemingly swallow you whole if it hasn’t already. When there is no such thing as hope and so you manufacture it from a dream which only angle is to survive.  
If all this sounds dramatic then you haven’t been there yet. If it doesn’t then you know that this is actually an understatement. The interesting parts of our stories are when they seem like the final chapter has been read and the book thrown in the fire. The interesting parts of our stories are written with the smoke of our burnt out lives.  
Come Back World is an album about rebirth and survival. At least that’s what it means to me. The title track I wrote in a little town on my way to aspen on a tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of Redemption’s Son. I was alone touring in a rented car driving myself across the country as a support act and doing what I could to rebuild my career. New management, eviction notices, an injured shoulder and most importantly estrangement from my family of origin. Discovering newly that my life and my soul had been ravaged for the most part covert forms of emotional abuse know. Commonly as NPD. The discovery of which is commonly followed by extreme isolation, PTSD, and the realization that nearly everything in your life needs to be built again.  
I realize this is an intense way to start a bio about a new album but there really is no other way to paint the story of how this album came to be if I want it to be anything resembling the truth.  
Because for me this album is all about surviving that predicament which for those unfamiliar with it will perhaps sound like madness (which it is ironically designed too) and for those that know about it and those that have survived it, will know that one can do little else but focus on the rebuilding, the bringing back of your world.  
Herman Hesse said the best art comes from necessity and this art certainly qualifies. I had nothing but songs to get me out of the hole I was in.  
The songs themselves aren’t all literal interpretations of what I was going through but the strength of them comes from the fact that I needed them to be good enough to deliver some kind of life back too me. A life I had lost that wasn’t gonna get found. But perhaps a new life could be built. A better one. One that wasn’t rooted in lies.  – JA

Join is again this St. Patrick's Day for a performance by Kelly Sloan and JIG. 
Kelly Sloan, the wonderful singer originally from Almonte, will be joining JIG for an evening of Irish music and song.  Kelly is now based in Toronto and has had a long and successful career performing and recording her own original songs, and that have been played many times on CBC radio.  However, her family and valley roots are rich in the Irish tradition.  Kelly has performed her Irish repertoire at Almonte’s Celtfest, and on multiple St. Patrick’s Days among others, and will be singing a choice selection of Irish ballads accompanied by JIG, who will also play instrumental selections of jigs, reels, polkas and more, from the Irish tradition.
The three members of JIG are among the best players of traditional celtic music in the region.  Those of you who know the local scene will already be familiar with the playing of James Stephens (fiddle/mandolin/ cittern), Ian Clark (guitar), and Greg Brown (fiddle/concertina, bouzouki). 
Get ready for a great night of real Irish folk music!

Jordan Caiola (CAI•OLA) is a songwriter/musician/producer based out of Philadelphia. 
He founded the indie rock band Mo Lowda & The Humble in 2010 and, due to its intense touring schedule, the band became his main priority along with his side project NightSeason (founded in 2016) - an indie/electro-pop producer duo. 
Though he always felt writing folk songs was his true “wheelhouse”, it wasn’t until the nationwide lockdown in early 2020 that he finally put aside the time to record a collection of those songs for his first solo album ‘Only Real When Shared’. His second record, a more mature and textural follow up entitled, 'This Could Be Everything', was released August 2nd, 2024 and is streaming everywhere.

This show will consist of two 50 minute sets with 30 minute intermission / meet & greet. Both sets will feature three stories, each ending with a rendition of that artists music by Jesse Greene.  
Richard Flohil has spent the last 60 years in the Canadian music business as a writer, concert promoter, band manager (and road manager), publicist, venue booker, folk and blues festival artistic director, and television talent coordinator. He goes to hear live music in clubs and at concerts regularly — he was at 126 music events last year. 
The only thing he’s not done is sing, play and instrument, or dance; he leaves that to people with superb musical talent, like Jesse Greene 
 Neither has he produced a record, though he’s sat in at almost two dozen recording sessions. As a concert promoter, he’s presented artists as diverse as B.B. King, Stompin’ Tom, Solomon Burke, Miles Davis, Rambling Jack Elliott, Muddy Waters, Benny Goodman, Ray Charles, The Chieftains, Leon Redbone, Mary Gauthier and dozens more. 
As a speaker, he has keynoted music conferences at several folk and blues conventions. 
As a publicist, helping artists become better known, his clients have included the Downchild Blues Band, Loreena McKennitt, k.d. lang, the Mariposa Folk Festival, Serena Ryder, Shakura S’Aida, Nana Mouskouri and many, many others. He has also worked with comedians Billy Connolly and Eric Idle and “stars” such as David Crosby, Alice Cooper and Beatles producer George Martin. 
For two years, he’s been writing pieces about all these people — and many others — on Substack, an online platform that allows writers to upload their article so subscribers can read them. He has more than 1,000 readers; his column is called “Stories From the Edge of Music." 
Because he can’t play music, the gods gave him the gift of talking about music. His stories are (he hopes) entertaining, informative, funny and even inspiring.

No stranger to Canadian and International audiences, Russell deCarle is recognized as the lead singer and one of the founding members of award-winning multi-platinum country-roots group Prairie Oyster. For over a decade, he has concentrated on his solo career, and has released four recordings, the most recent being “The End of the Road”. 
 deCarle’s music isn’t easily categorized. Apparent are influences from a lifetime spent absorbing musical genres ranging from southern soul and restrained balladry--with obvious touches of jazz and blues--to old-school country and western swing.
Russell is joined by stellar sidemen, Steve Briggs on guitar and Russ Boswell on bass.

In 2022, Gunning released The Same Storm, an album written and recorded during the pandemic, continuing his tradition of celebrating everyday moments and giving voice to the overlooked. Matthew Barber is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, recording and touring artist, producer, and sometimes drummer. He’s been making records and touring professionally since 2003.
He has a bunch of albums out there that you can track down digitally on the streaming platforms or on LP and CD (please visit his “Merch” section for links to where you can buy stuff). Some have even been nominated for awards. The latest one is called Phase Of The Moon and it’s one of the best. As we emerge from the global pandemic he’s excited to get back to playing live shows and releasing new music.

Lennie Gallant

East Coast songwriter Lennie Gallant has released fifteen albums of original songs which have won him a host of awards and nominations from the JUNOs, Les Prix Éloizes, and The ECMAs. His songs have been described as “true slices of life delivered with a poet’s flair and a rugged emotional sensibility”. His song Peter’s Dream, about the state of the oceans and those who harvest from it was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Lennie performs internationally and has toured, not only with his band, but also with symphony orchestras. His songs have been covered by many artists and he has performed with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers and with David Foster and his band.
Lennie has two co-writes on Jimmy's last album, and was invited to sing on it as a featured artist. One of Lennie's physical albums actually was taken up to the international space station and circled the planet 248 times, finally giving the artist high rotation worldwide!
His album, Time Travel, was voted a top ten Album of the Year by a panel of Canadian music industry personnel, and his recent all original Christmas album has enabled sold out tours. He and partner Patricia Richard also record and perform as the popular Francophone duo, Sirène et Matelot. Their songs have achieved strong play on francophone radio and have consistently remained on the charts! Lennie Gallant is a member of The Order of Canada and has been recognized for his humanitarian efforts.

The Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes Of Wrath: unplugged
After bonding over a mutual love of The Beatles, drummer Chris Hooper introduced Kevin Kane to his younger brother Tom Hooper in 1977. While still attending elementary and junior high school in Kelowna BC, the trio began learning to play their instruments together during regular Friday night jam sessions in the basement of the Hoopers’ suburban home.
 Influenced in equal parts by the British Invasion of the 60s and the DIY attitudes and immediacy of punk and new wave, the group took the name The Grapes Of Wrath in 1983, and began working on the songs that would make up their debut EP (The Grapes of Wrath, 1984) and first album (September Bowl Of Green, 1985), both of which were released by Vancouver indie label Nettwerk Productions. The band were soon signed by Capitol/EMI for albums “Treehouse” (1987), “Now And Again” (1989), and “These Days” (1991). These records spawned some of the most well-known Canadian songs of the 80s and 90s, including Peace Of Mind, Backward Town, All The Things I Wasn’t, What Was Going Through My Head, I Am Here and You May Be Right. Thanks in no small part to the support of MuchMusic, the Grapes enjoyed gold and platinum sales, with sold out shows at home in Canada, extensive radio play, and several US and European tours in support of albums that also saw release in Japan, Australia, and South America. Amid mounting tensions in the band, the group disbanded in 1992 at the height of their career.
Tom and Kevin resurrected the Grapes in the late 90s, subsequently releasing the album “Field Trip” (2000) on the Song Corp label, and reuniting for another series of acoustic duo shows in the summer of 2009 to celebrate their enduring friendship and the music they had written. The following year, an offer from a festival for a full band reunion led to the return of drummer Chris, and the original three recorded “High Road” (2013) - their first album of new material in almost 22 years - named after the street the Hoopers had lived on when they first started playing together as kids. They have been playing regularly ever since and are arguably the longest-running, still-active “original lineup” in rock.
This year, Tom and Kevin are once again hitting the road as a duo to perform The Grapes’ music in an intimate and unplugged setting, telling the stories behind the songs and putting the focus on the harmonies and melodies of their timeless music.

John Moreland

After an impressive 2010s run of albums that earned him a devoted fanbase, accolades from outlets like The New York Times, Fresh Air, and Pitchfork, and a place in the upper echelon of modern Americana singer-songwriters, John Moreland has already taken two unexpected turns this decade, both of which highlight his fierce artistic independence. First, he released a brilliant and sonically layered folk-electronica meditation on modern alienation, 2022’s Birds In The Ceiling, that took some of his fans by surprise. Then, after wrapping up a difficult tour behind that record in November 2022, he stopped working entirely. He took an entire year off from playing shows and didn’t use a smartphone for 6 months. “At the end of that year, I was just like ‘Nobody call me’. I needed to not do anything for a while and just process,” Moreland says. After nearly a decade in the limelight, constantly jostled by the expectations of his audience, the music industry, and anonymous strangers online, he carved out some time to rest, heal, and reflect for the first time.
The result of that unplugged year at home is 2024’s Visitor, a folk-rock record that is intimate, immediate, deeply thoughtful, and catchy as hell. Moreland recorded the album at his home in Bixby, Oklahoma, in only ten days, playing nearly every instrument himself (his wife Pearl Rachinsky sang on one song, and his longtime collaborator John Calvin Abney contributed a guitar solo), as well as engineering and mixing the album. “Simplicity and immediacy felt very important to the process,” he says.
This is a return to the approach Moreland took on his breakthrough albums, 2013’s In The Throes and 2015’s High On Tulsa Heat, both of which were largely self-recorded at home with a small cadre of additional musicians. Echoes of these early albums can be heard on Visitor (Moreland makes a passing reference to In The Throes’ opening track “I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am” in two different songs on Visitor), which finds Moreland shutting out the noisy world outside, and the even noisier digital world in his pocket, to reconnect with a muse that’s had to increasingly compete for his attention in the intervening years. Visitor charts his journey back to this muse. If Birds In The Ceiling’s theme was alienation, Visitor’s theme is un-alienation.
Moreland begins the album where he began his year-long process of healing: doomscrolling past images of political turmoil, war, and environmental destruction, in a trio of surprisingly hooky folk songs that address present-day social realities more directly than any previous John Moreland songs. On opening track “The Future Is Coming Fast”, Moreland describes the perpetually logged-on life in a time of rolling catastrophe over gentle fingerpicking: “The news keeps steady coming in / Our condition shows its teeth again / A nightmare we all thought would end.”
In the bridge of that song, Moreland lands on a key couplet that captures the personal toll of living inside a perpetual cycle of digital bleakness, while also hinting at a way out: “But we don’t grieve, and we don’t rest / We just choose the lie that feels the best.” In order to cope with our digitally mediated lives, where we constantly bear witness to ongoing disasters while feeling powerless to do anything about them, we must walk around in a persistent state of denial. We repress feelings and lie to ourselves continuously. This status quo is, of course, antithetical to the conditions that produce transcendent works of art. For an artist with ambitions like Moreland’s, this is a big problem.
An infinite feed filled with bad news isn’t the only thing that’s been keeping Moreland from processing his emotions. Ironically, a busy career as a touring musician can prevent you from doing the deep self-reflection so necessary to the creative process just as much as a smartphone can. On “No Time”, Moreland sings “Now it’s all a blur / They told you who you were,” followed by the chorus line, “I don’t have the time to cry”. In the bridge of “Will The Heavens Catch Us?”, Moreland describes how painful it can feel to focus exclusively on chasing success - often by following rules set down by others - without taking the time to process one’s emotions, reflect, and heal: “We writhe in agony / For our precious little legacy”. No wonder Moreland needed a break.
So what’s Moreland’s solution to this impasse? The first step is the same one that Henry David Thoreau posed in Walden, another work about an artist intentionally isolating with the purpose of pursuing a deeper truth: “Simplify, simplify, simplify”. No shows for a whole year. No smartphone. No studio time. No additional musicians. Strip things away and let inspiration emerge. On a musical level, the result is a raw, straightforward sound. Moreland leaves a lot of space in these songs. To hammer home the folk immediacy, he includes some new-for-him instrumentation, most prominently on two haunting instrumental interludes that he tracked live with a field recorder during late-night country drives. (Who knew that, on top of everything else, Moreland plays the mandolin and fiddle?) The result is that, when Moreland sings “The more you say, the less it means” on the track of that title, it has the feeling of being a sort of personal mantra.
By doing all of that simplifying, Moreland creates space to invite the muse back in - a process that he narrates in a pair of gorgeous invocations that kick off Side Two of the album, “Blue Dream Carolina” and “Silver Sliver” (the latter of which was also tracked live with a field recorder). He begins the side with what is perhaps the record’s most poignant verse:
Blue dream Carolina, remind me why I do thisTell me what the truth is, don’t tell me who to beI don’t have to tell you this life is plenty painfulHere comes my fallen angel, falling down on me
By the end of this verse, his muse, his “fallen angel”, has returned to him, now a little worse for the wear. And by the end of the album, Moreland even seems to have resolved some of the internal struggles that led to his year off the road, as is revealed in a fiery couplet that signals his recommitment to a relentless pursuit of the truth: “I will not be your puppet or your payment / Your easy entertainment, for I’ve made amends to me.” Moreland has grieved and rested and come out on the other side with a new world-weariness and hard-won wisdom.
But there is another path he could have taken. On his Petty-esque ode to despair “One Man Holds The World Hostage”, Moreland cleverly leaves the identity of the “one man” in question open. He could be one of any number of the men currently endangering humanity, whether it’s a world leader with access to nuclear weapons, an oil CEO pursuing ever-greater profits in spite of the threat posed by climate change, or just an average Joe with hate in his heart. But all of these “one men” have something in common. As Moreland sings, “One man holds the world hostage ‘cause he’s afraid of his feelings”. This is the line that unifies the album’s social commentary with the personal journey that Moreland describes. The denial and avoidance that most of us rely on to cope with the relentless speed and noise of modern life are, if allowed to fester, also the source of our greatest dangers. If we don’t work through our shit, Moreland suggests, we all have the potential to turn to the dark side. Moreland’s narration of his journey back to his muse is more than a simple anecdote, then. The steps that he took - simplify your life, then listen to that deep and quiet voice inside of you long and hard - form a road map for all of us toward some sort of healing, not just for ourselves individually, but potentially for society as a whole.
John Moreland is known for writing lines that hit you in the gut, but many of the best moments on Visitor are more subtle. The significance of one of the record’s best lines, from “The More You Say, The Less It Means,” may take multiple listens to fully sink in: “Some folks say and some folks know”. This line sums up John Moreland’s worldview very neatly. It lays out the dichotomy of truth and lies that Moreland has spent his entire career examining, but now more elegantly than ever. On the one hand, there are people who constantly talk (or sing, or write, or post online) without deep thought or reflection - often irresponsibly, even dangerously, and for personal gain. These are the “weary worn-out fools” and “famous false prophets” he lambasted on In The Throes, or the subject of “One Man Holds The World Hostage” on Visitor. And on the other hand, there are folks who know - those who commit themselves to the pursuit of truth and wisdom, and who only say things when they fully know them to be true. In Moreland’s book, the artist’s true calling is to be one of the latter - the “folks who know”. While John Moreland has already earned a spot in the pantheon of the great singer-songwriters of his generation, Visitor confirms his place in that much loftier Hall Of Fame.
 
 
About Ramsey Thornton
Tulsa, Oklahoma songwriter Ramsey Thornton is just getting started. His introspective and conversational lyricism mark his welcome to the burgeoning songwriter renaissance. An immediate and gentle warmth in his voice propelled his cover of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” to Spotify’s playlist Bluegrass Covers.
 However, it is not only in the lyrics, where Ramsey says he “takes note of the overheard,” but in the intricate compositions that accompany them. “Fingerpicking banjo and guitar is central to all of my songs. I pay close attention to rhythmic intricacy,” he said of the music he writes to induce the words. Adding, “Most of the time a guitar or banjo part will come first.” 
 His introduction to music began at an early age with the drums, and he became a multi-instrumentalist in his late teens. At 26 years-old, Ramsey has been writing songs now for a few years, releasing his self-titled EP in 2022. With influences from Nick Drake to Neil Young and Paul Simon, Thornton’s style is decorated with a fun and earnest spirit, turning even the everyday into a touching, beautiful experience. 
 “I often use songwriting as a tool to draw out subconscious thoughts—helps me sort out the things heavy on my mind, even if they’re hanging out in the background,” he said about the songs he writes. Currently his debut EP and some choice covers are available for streaming everywhere. Ramsey signed to La Honda Records in July 2024 with promises of new music.
