Join us for an evening  of Celtic Music played by some of the best in the region. There will be a concert from 8pm to 10pm, with a jam to follow, so bring your instruments and get in on the fun.

Ecosse are a collection of Ottawa area musicians led by Bobby Watt (who has been described more than once as having the best male voice in Traditional music). In this iteration of the band for Red Bird, Bobby is joined by multi-instrumentalists James Stephens and Pat Maher, both of whom are also well known in the Canadian folk community and beyond. A night of songs, many of which require audience participation on harmonies, tunes and stories.

Stuart Ross is the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Harbourfront Festival Prize. He is a Cobourg-based fiction writer, poet, editor, translator, and creative-writing instructor. He has been active in the Toronto literary scene since the mid-1970s. In 1987, he co-founded, with Nicholas Power, the Toronto Small Press Book Fair, and was co-coordinator of the fair for its first three years. In 2008, he became a founding member of the Meet the Presses collective, which puts on the annual Indie Literary Market and administers the bpNichol Chapbook Award.Stuart is the author of twelve full poetry collections, most recently 70 Kippers: The Dagmar Poems (w/ Michael Dennis; Proper Tales Press, 2020); Motel of the Opposable Thumbs (ECW Press, 2019); A Sparrow Came Down Resplendent (Wolsak and Wynn, 2016), winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Poetry; A Hamburger in a Gallery (DC Books, 2015); Our Days in Vaudeville (Mansfield Press, 2013), for which he collaborated with 29 other Canadian poets; and You Exist. Manahil Bandukwala is a writer and visual artist based in Mississauga and Ottawa, Ontario. She is the author of Heliotropia (Brick Books, 2024) and MONUMENT (Brick Books, 2022), which was shortlisted for the 2023 Gerald Lampert Award, and was selected as a Writer’s Trust of Canada Rising Star in 2023. She is the co-creator of Reth aur Reghistan, a multidisciplinary project exploring folklore from Pakistan through poetry, sculpture, and community arts. See her work at manahilbandukwala.com.
Alice Burdick is the author of five books of poetry. Her poems and essays have appeared in multiple anthologies, chapbooks, folios, broadsides, cookbooks, and films. She leads workshops for children and adults and is a mentor, freelance editor, proofreader, and manuscript assessor. She lives in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Véronique Sylvain was born and raised in Northern Ontario. She now lives in Ottawa where she works in publishing. She is the author of the collection Premier quart (Trillium Poetry Prize, Ottawa Book Award, Champlain Prize and AAOF Emergence Award) and holds a Master's degree in French literature from the University of Ottawa. Several of her texts have appeared in collective collections, including Poèmes de la résistance, Projet TERRE, as well as in creative writing magazines (e.g. Zinc, Ancrages).

Jeremy Fisher is a 4-time JUNO-nominated folk-pop singer-songwriter based in Ottawa. He has released 6 studio albums and his music has been featured on radio, in film (The Big Year, Our Idiot Brother), commercials (Volkswagen, American Airlines), and as main title TV themes (Disney, Global). Over the last 20 years Jeremy has toured the world and shared the stage with artists such as Alanis Morissette, Blue Rodeo and Indigo Girls.

First Hall of Fame Inductees Announced for Gee-Gees Women’s Hockey
The inaugural class of inductees for the Gee-Gees Women’s Hockey Hall of Fame will celebrate the contributions of two program builders and a historic All-Canadian forward, all of whom have made an indelible mark on the program’s history.
Kim (Kerr) Brent will be inducted in the athlete category, alongside Shelley Coolidge and Bob Bowes in the builder category.
The inductees will be celebrated at a Hall of Fame ceremony on campus on Saturday, November 23, as part of the program’s 25th anniversary season.

For each of the ten years of The Barrel Boys’ existence, their bluegrass Christmas concert has been an important part of their Christmas season. Even while unable to perform live during the Covid-19 Pandemic, the band pulled together to create 2020’s “The Barrel Boys’ Christmas Special” and the 2021 follow-up “The Barrel Boys’ Christmas Special Vol. II, A Christmas Barrel” (both on YouTube). These 30-minute old-fashioned TV-style specials showcased the Boys’ charming wit and creativity as well as bass player Tim O’Reilly’s audio-visual production talents.

The only good thing about not shopping in record stores anymore is you won’t have to figure out what genre to look for Danny under. If that were the case, you could try looking under, rock, pop, folk, world or even classical.His own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. Maybe it has something to do with being born next to a candy factory, or his ambidextrous brain, but his thoughtful lyrics & charming performances have earned a devoted fan base, multiple nominations for Junos, The Polaris Prize, CBC’s "Heart Of Gold", and most recently winning the CFMA's "Producer of the year" and "Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries" Awards.
But Danny considers his career highlights to be the unique real life moments like performing for Jane Goodall’s 85th birthday party, touring with Stuart Mclean and working with charities close to his heart.
In 2015, his adventurous spirit took him to the country of Belize where he tracked down one of his favourite Belizean bands&semi The Garifuna Collective (a unique Afro-Amerindian cultural group) and convinced them to create an album together. That album (“Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me”) was called “One of the finest musical works of our time” by Billboard's Larry Leblanc, landed Danny’s 3rd Juno nomination (World Music Album Of The Year), and a sold out summer tour of North America with The Garifuna Collective.While in Belize, Danny also founded the DM Ocean Academy Fund that helps raise scholarships for a small non-profit community high school. To date, Danny & his fans have raised over $125,000.00 for the school.In 2016, Danny returned to Canada to record "Matadora," his most deeply humanist album to date. This ten-song collection explores the environmentalist, pacifist, romanticist, archivist, and space enthusiast in Danny.Then it was off to the Canadian high Arctic where Danny recorded “Khlebnikov” (possibly the most northern album ever recorded/above 80°) aboard the legendary Soviet-era Russian ice-breaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov during an 18-day arctic expedition curated by Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield. Once home, Danny’s recordings were arranged for brass & strings by film composer Rob Carli. The result is a suite of atmospheric and haunting songs about the Arctic, our planet, and our place in it. When he’s not performing he’s fighting for musicians’ rights, the environment, making short films, producing, running his studio or filming his comedy/sci-fi/music show “Dan’s Space Van”

Shane Pendergast has folk music in his blood.
Hailing from a long lineage of storytellers and musicians in Prince Edward Island, he is keeping the Maritime folk tradition alive with his honest and insightful compositions. From acclaimed folk festivals across the world to the small halls of PEI, Shane has cemented himself as one of Atlantic Canada’s finest folk troubadours.
His 2021 album ‘Second Wind” won Contemporary Roots Album of the Year at the Music PEI Awards, and his live album “The House Before the Bridge” was nominated for Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year at the 2023 ECMA’s.
Shane's fourth album, "Winter Grace" is set to release on January 17th 2025. The new album is Shane's most introspective and intimate work to date. Though written as a 'winter album', the recording has a vintage warmth, with themes of love, loss, and finding hope in a frigid landscape.

Sophie Lukacs is a Budapest born, Montreal based artist, who grew up studying the violin and western classical music. Of Jewish Hungarian descent, she is most inspired by music's power to move and bring people together. She is the grand-daughter of Eva Fahidi, a prominent writer and dancer who survived the Holocaust, and with whom she sang her first Hungarian folk songs.
Sophie begins adulthood studying International Development and Music at McGill University. She travels on an internship to Burkina Faso, where she first discovers the musical culture of the Mandingue tradition, and its majestic instrument: the kora.
This music moves her deeply.  Yet, she can't imagine how to learn the instrument, since the kora is traditionally reserved for men from the "griot" caste. Sophie returns to Montreal to study pre-med, but music is never forgotten. She plays in the McGill orchestra, and listens compulsively to any kora recordings she finds. Finally, she leaves university, moves to New York, and immerses herself in music, dance, literature. One memorable day, riding the subway, Sophie steps out at Columbus circle, and hears the call of the kora. She follows the music and finds kora master Malang Jobarteh playing in the station. It's the sign she has been waiting for. She studies kora in New York and Montreal, then travels to Paris for a masterclass with kora legend Toumani Diabaté. Diabaté invites her to Bamako, she packs, and leaps into the unknown.
For 7 years, in Mali, Sophie devotes herself to the kora and its traditional repertoire. Only after that does she acknowledge the stirring of her own music and stories. With the blessing and encouragement of her many teachers and mentors, including Habib Koité, and Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, and with profound gratitude for all they have shared with her, Sophie begins to compose her own music on the kora.
Sophie releases her LP "Bamako," in 2023, written and recorded mostly in Mali, featuring two tracks with the legendary Habib Koité. The album is awarded the Global Roots Album of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and is praised in SONGLINES journal as a “splendid debut album” with “rich and lyrical” playing. That album (“Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me”) was called “One of the finest musical works of our time” by Billboard's Larry Leblanc, landed Danny’s 3rd Juno nomination (World Music Album Of The Year), and a sold out summer tour of North America with The Garifuna Collective.While in Belize, Danny also founded the DM Ocean Academy Fund that helps raise scholarships for a small non-profit community high school. To date, Danny & his fans have raised over $125,000.00 for the school.In 2016, Danny returned to Canada to record "Matadora," his most deeply humanist album to date. This ten-song collection explores the environmentalist, pacifist, romanticist, archivist, and space enthusiast in Danny.Then it was off to the Canadian high Arctic where Danny recorded “Khlebnikov” (possibly the most northern album ever recorded/above 80°) aboard the legendary Soviet-era Russian ice-breaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov during an 18-day arctic expedition curated by Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield. Once home, Danny’s recordings were arranged for brass & strings by film composer Rob Carli. The result is a suite of atmospheric and haunting songs about the Arctic, our planet, and our place in it. When he’s not performing he’s fighting for musicians’ rights, the environment, making short films, producing, running his studio or filming his comedy/sci-fi/music show “Dan’s Space Van”

Ian Robb, Ann Downey and Shelley Posen are joined by Ian’s JIIG bandmates, James Stephens, Ian Clark and Greg Brown, for an evening of traditional carols and wassails, songs, tunes and stories for the festive season.

Ian, Ann, and Shelley—A.K.A. the vocal trio Finest Kind—toured in Canada, the US and UK over a period of 25 years, gaining a loyal following for their unique brand of vocal harmony and eclectic repertoire. After retiring from the road, they continued to perform their very popular annual Christmas show at Wakefield’s Black Sheep Inn, along with the “fourth member of the trio” James Stephens, until the pandemic put a stop to live performance. Ian, Ann, Shelley, and James—along with JIIG members Ian Clark and Greg Brown—resurrected that seasonal magic last year at Red Bird, and are glad to continue the tradition this year with three shows at Red Bird.
