Santur player, composer, and cultural inventor Amir Amiri dwells at the centre of a unique musical universe where ancient inspiration, dazzling virtuosity, and bold creativity meet. Surrounding himself with outstanding collaborators from the worlds of jazz, classical and world music, Amiri fearlessly transcends genres and borders, exquisitely transporting his ancient instrument into the musical conversations of our time. Born in Tehran, Iran, Amiri is a master of the santur, a 72-string instrument dating from approximately 500 BCE.
Since arriving in Canada in 1996, Amiri has created numerous groundbreaking ensembles including the Amir Amiri Ensemble, inspired by the fluidity of musical influences in Iran. The Amir Amiri ensemble is an ensemble of virtuoso musicians from the Persian tradition: Amir Amiri (santur),  Abdul-Wahab Khayyali (oud), Reza Abaee (ghaychak),  Omar Abu Afech (Viola), and Hamin Honari (percussion). Inspired by the diversity and fluidity of the many musical influences of Iran, the Amir Amiri Ensemble creates an engaging and distinctive sound fusing the refinement of traditional and spiritual Persian music with folkloric and modern elements. In seeking to expand the boundaries of these musical traditions, balancing heritage and innovation, they find that the possibilities are limitless. In its 31st year, and as popular today as ever, one of this country’s most joyous annual traditions returns to Victoria this December with two performances! 
Known for sold-out houses and standing ovations, this ensemble is a "must-see" ticket on the holiday calendar. Winter Harp is a joyous concert experience that has captured the spirit of the season, and audience's hearts, for more than three decades. On stage, Winter Harp’s outstanding musicians and singers, clad in beautiful medieval attire, perform a collection of music that ranges from familiar carols to Celtic, medieval and world tunes.
The Alix Goolden theatre sets a gorgeous backdrop for the ensemble's golden Celtic and classical harps, drums, tambourines, temple bells, flutes, and an assortment of beautiful, ancient and rare instruments, including the ethereal-sounding bass psaltery (the only one like it in the world), the organistrum (an early form of the hurdy-gurdy) and the Swedish nyckelharpa.

Hosted at the beautiful Crystal Garden, the Gala will feature mouthwatering bites and sips from over 50 local restaurants and beverage purveyors with lively entertainment, socializing and fun!

About the event 
The annual Spark to Flame concert, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music, is a cherished event that nurtures the talents of young, emerging artists as they take their first steps toward professional musicianship. In this milestone year, as the Victoria Conservatory of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary and 25 years of performances in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall, the event promises to be more memorable than ever. 
Open to all Conservatory students, soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then guided by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the concert, including special rehearsals with an orchestra. 
This year’s performance, held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, will spotlight seven exceptional student soloists, accompanied by an ensemble of peers, faculty, and professional musicians for an evening of inspiring music.

Santur player, composer, and cultural inventor Amir Amiri dwells at the centre of a unique musical universe where ancient inspiration, dazzling virtuosity, and bold creativity meet. Surrounding himself with outstanding collaborators from the worlds of jazz, classical and world music, Amiri fearlessly transcends genres and borders, exquisitely transporting his ancient instrument into the musical conversations of our time. Born in Tehran, Iran, Amiri is a master of the santur, a 72-string instrument dating from approximately 500 BCE.
Since arriving in Canada in 1996, Amiri has created numerous groundbreaking ensembles including the Amir Amiri Ensemble, inspired by the fluidity of musical influences in Iran. The Amir Amiri ensemble is an ensemble of virtuoso musicians from the Persian tradition: Amir Amiri (santur),  Abdul-Wahab Khayyali (oud), Reza Abaee (ghaychak),  Omar Abu Afech (Viola), and Hamin Honari (percussion). Inspired by the diversity and fluidity of the many musical influences of Iran, the Amir Amiri Ensemble creates an engaging and distinctive sound fusing the refinement of traditional and spiritual Persian music with folkloric and modern elements. In seeking to expand the boundaries of these musical traditions, balancing heritage and innovation, they find that the possibilities are limitless. In the eclectic musical universe of Amir Amiri Ensemble, borders are abolished to make way for bewitching alchemy, a mystical conversation between these kindred-spirit musicians.

Please arrive at the bike shop 15-20 minutes prior to your tour. The tour departs promptly at the time scheduled. Before departing the bike shop, we will adjust a bicycle for you, suit you up with a helmet, and confirm you have completed a waiver.
Parking must be obtained for at least 3.5 hours. We recommend taking public transit or walking to meet us at Sports Rent. As we respect the time of all guests on our tour, latecomers will risk the tour leaving without them.
There is a washroom for use at Sports Rent and a washroom break roughly 1.5 hours into the tour.
