About the event 
The annual Spark to Flame concert, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music, is a cherished event that nurtures the talents of young, emerging artists as they take their first steps toward professional musicianship. In this milestone year, as the Victoria Conservatory of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary and 25 years of performances in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall, the event promises to be more memorable than ever. 
Open to all Conservatory students, soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then guided by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the concert, including special rehearsals with an orchestra. 
This year’s performance, held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, will spotlight seven exceptional student soloists, accompanied by an ensemble of peers, faculty, and professional musicians for an evening of inspiring music.

Black Ends

Black Ends (Seattle) is Nicolle Swims (guitar, vocals), Ben Swanson (bass), and Billie Paine (drums). Black Ends’ self-described gunk pop is about as sweet as that wad of asphalt-crusted bubblegum you found stuck on the bottom of your favorite boots. Much like the legendary grunge bands that influenced the Seattle trio, Black Ends is artfully adept at smothering catchy pop and rock structures with toxic levels of grime; but please don’t call them “grunge”.
 
Conjure Hand

Conjure Hand (Victoria) is a local Heavy Southern Rock, Blues & Soul band formed. Fronted by Black Caesar, Conjure Hand's music bellows the tales of African American and Canadian history, voodoo and working class struggles. Black Caesar is backed by The Shah on guitar, Vince Dupuis’ psychedelic organs, Duncan Chisholm's thunderous drums, and Victor Horne’s rolling basslines that keep it all glued together. Black Caesar delivers lyrics are rich in history and storytelling, evoking perseverance, strife, self-determination and the Black struggle.
 
Gadfly

Gadfly (Vancouver) is the brainchild of Iranian artist Homa Khoshnavaz, who created the band as a way to express her displeasure at the treatment of women in her country. She pours her anger and frustration into creating a strained and heavy sound that dabbles in noisy psychedelia. With Nigel Young on drums and Raine Menard on bass, the trio keep things tight, yet right on the edge of chaos. Keep an eye out for them as they continue to play shows across Canada, drop the occasional single, and never let go of the notion of woman, life, freedom. 
 
Standard Issue Pleasure Model

Standard Issue Pleasure Model (Victoria) is the psychedelic garage-rock outfit of Shea Morgan and Raine Balson. Supported by Ben DeCicco (drums) and Josh Egert (bass) in the rhythm section, Standard Issue Pleasure Model's glam-grunge energy has propelled themselves throughout the underground scene for nearly 10 years. Raine channels energies of the great frontwomen of the seventies, delivering passionate, fresh, and captivating performances. Stay tuned as they work on their 2nd album, “Trip-sitter.”

This year’s performers include the young fiddlers of the BC Fiddle Orchestra and the Old-Time Danceband, joined by alumni from the past 31 years. Adding to the toe-tapping excitement will be members of Folkestra! and the Joy of Life Choir, backed by the mighty Joy of Life House Band of renowned local musicians.

DJ/Producer Bÿständer emerged from the depths of Amsterdam’s techno underground and is now electrifying Vancouver's scene with high-octane, genre-defying sets. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey's entertainment capital, Bÿständer’s journey into electronic music started early, driven by her love for Techno, Trance, Acid, and Hardcore.
Known for her eclectic soundscapes, lightning-fast transitions, and ingenious vocal blends, Bÿständer’s sets are anything but ordinary. Her classical training in piano and violin provides a unique, structured edge to her performances, complemented by her skill in energising the crowd with her active performance. Bÿständer showcases various elements that define her sets, such as metallic resonance, natural rhythms and hypnotic melodies while always being accompanied by hard kicks.

The Civic Orchestra presents its final concert of the 2024-2025 Season at Dave Dunnet Community Theatre on Saturday, May 24th.
The Orchestra and their new Music Director, Grant Harville, are thrilled to collaborate with violinist Megan Karls, performing Sibelius' Violin Concerto! The program will also feature works by other Northern composers Tchaikovsky, Munktell, and Canadian composer Gary Kulesha.
Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors, $10 for students. Children 12 and under are free with an adult, however we ask that you select a free Children's ticket when purchasing your adult ticket so that we have an accurate seat count. Maximum children's tickets per adult is two (2). Any additional children's tickets may be purchased at the $10 student price. Thank you.
Please note that while Civic Orchestra concerts are family-friendly, most programs are not suitable for very young children. If attending with children, please seat yourself near an exit so that you may easily take your children to the lobby during a performance if they become disruptive. Please be mindful of the concert-going experience of the patrons around you; we want everyone to enjoy the show! Thank you. 
Megan Karls
Violinist Megan Karls makes her home in the American Rockies, where she is the Concertmaster of the Wyoming Symphony, Co-Concertmaster of the Great Falls Symphony and newly appointed to the Fort Collins Symphony as Assistant Principal Second Violin. Her musical leadership is in high demand as a frequent guest concertmaster across the West, including the Billings Symphony, Bozeman Symphony and Opera Montana. Her solo concerto appearances recently have been alongside the Northwest Civic Orchestra, Milwaukee Philharmonic and the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra. 
She spends her summers performing with the Britt Festival Orchestra, as Principal Second Violin of the McCall Musicfest Orchestra, and guest teaching across the world in San Salvador, El Salvador, Tlahuitoltepec, Mexico and around the United States.
Megan is a recipient of the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award, and the first woman in classical music to receive the Montana State Arts Council’s Artist Innovation Award. She holds degrees with honors in violin performance and political science from Lawrence University and the University of Iowa.
