The Joy of Life concerts take place on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 PM. This year’s performers include the young fiddlers of the BC Fiddle Orchestra and the Old-Time Danceband, joined by alumni from the past 31 years. Adding to the toe-tapping excitement will be members of Folkestra! and the Joy of Life Choir, backed by the mighty Joy of Life House Band of renowned local musicians. 
Topped off with performances by Daniel’s special guests, these concerts inspire all ages, celebrating life as it blossoms in spring across the nation and resonates at home in Victoria through the wonderful power of live Canadian music.

Q:can we tip the performers?
A:Yes!! We prefer CASH but you can also tip electronically with our paypal QR code. Tips are split evenly among all performers.
Q: is there parking? 
A: There is very limited street parking along Johnson street, however the Vicious Poodle is conveniently located close to the Johnson street parkade. There are also numerous buses that travel from external communities to the downtown core.   
Q: is the venue wheelchair accessible?
A: Yes. However, there is a slight curb ( about 1 inch) in the doorway of the main entrance. Tables on the main level of the venue are accessible, the lower level is not wheel chair accessible. 
Q: can we reserve seats?*** 
A: No. Seating is first come first serve- make sure to arrive early if you have a big group! Performers will be roaming the venue during their acts, so you are guaranteed a good show from any seat!

Q: Are there gender neutral washrooms?
A: yes

Kelowna Falcons vs. Victoria HarbourCats - SUMMER FIREWORKS!

It’s been over 20 years since Daniel Lapp released an album of his own fiddle playing. Of course he hasn’t been sitting idle and quite the opposite. Since his last fiddle album, Reunion, released in 2002, he’s taught the fiddle to hundreds of students, toured and recorded with his electronic band, Lappelectro, as well as playing live shows with Rickie Lee Jones, Gord Downie, Elvis Costello and Lou Reed to name a few. He’s been around and off the continent many times and has developed an innovative program for Contemporary Music at the Victoria Conservatory of Music of which he’s the Artistic Director. His annual Home For Christmas Concert which features his 180 students has grown to two full houses in the Royal Theatre and will celebrate 23 years in 2025. No, he hasn’t been sitting around. During this time he’s also composed hundreds of fiddle tunes, collected 3000 original BC Tunes from 300 composers and started a new record label called Woodbox Records to promote, preserve and archive BC’s 150 year history of fiddle music. Now it’s time for him to play and record and he’s thrilled to share the new album with you onstage with 3 of his former students, all world travelers in their own right. And he just turned 60! Come celebrate a new era of Daniel Lapp!

Direct from Tanzania: THE ZAWOSE QUEENS
There is spirit and fire in the music of The Zawose Queens, coming direct from Tanzania! There's the vibrations of the ancestors, coming through on traditional instruments — soaring chizeze fiddle, buzzing illimba thumb piano, ngoma drums that chatter and thunder — and voices that go deep, high and out there. There's the connection to nature, to ceremony and ritual, in their dance-inspired fusion, their blend of the organic, harmonic and modern-day electronic. There are lyrics that tell, in their native kigogo, of the passion for music, the wonders of life. Of pride in environment, in tradition. In their East African roots.
Pendo and Leah Zawose showcase the fluid polyrhythms and rapturous polyphonic singing of the Gogo (aka Wagogo) people of the arid, hilly Dodoma region of central Tanzania. The most famous exponent of this musical tradition is the late, great Dr Hukwe Zawose (Pendo’s father and Leah’s grandfather).
Maisha, the debut album by The Zawose Queens, marks the first time that women from this famous musical family take their place as lead vocalists and performers. The resulting collection of songs range from the stripped back and traditional-sounding to those treated with subtle electronic elements, with beats and drops and found sounds and switch-ups.

Caravan World Rhythms

The Civic Orchestra presents its final concert of the 2024-2025 Season at Dave Dunnet Community Theatre on Saturday, May 24th.
The Orchestra and their Music Director, Grant Harville, are thrilled to collaborate with violinist Megan Karls, performing Sibelius' Violin Concerto! The program will also feature works by Tchaikovsky, Munktell, and Canadian composer Gary Kulesha.
Come early to enjoy a pre-concert talk with Grant Harville at 1pm in the theatre and get interesting insights into the music you're about to hear!
 
Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors, $10 for students. Children 12 and under are free with an adult, however we ask that you select a free Children's ticket when purchasing your adult ticket so that we have an accurate seat count. Maximum children's tickets per adult is two (2). Any additional children's tickets may be purchased at the $10 student price. Thank you.
Please note that while Civic Orchestra concerts are family-friendly, most programs are not suitable for very young children. If attending with children, please seat yourself near an exit so that you may easily take your children to the lobby during a performance if they become disruptive. Please be mindful of the concert-going experience of the patrons around you; we want everyone to enjoy the show! Thank you. 
Megan Karls
Violinist Megan Karls makes her home in the American Rockies, where she is the Concertmaster of the Wyoming Symphony, Co-Concertmaster of the Great Falls Symphony and newly appointed to the Fort Collins Symphony as Assistant Principal Second Violin. Her musical leadership is in high demand as a frequent guest concertmaster across the West, including the Billings Symphony, Bozeman Symphony and Opera Montana. Her solo concerto appearances recently have been alongside the Northwest Civic Orchestra, Milwaukee Philharmonic and the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra. 
She spends her summers performing with the Britt Festival Orchestra, as Principal Second Violin of the McCall Musicfest Orchestra, and guest teaching across the world in San Salvador, El Salvador, Tlahuitoltepec, Mexico and around the United States.
Megan is a recipient of the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award, and the first woman in classical music to receive the Montana State Arts Council’s Artist Innovation Award. She holds degrees with honors in violin performance and political science from Lawrence University and the University of Iowa.

Experience an electrifying evening of genre-defying music as the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music presents its annual Faculty Concert.
Under the direction of Daniel Lapp, this concert brings together our world-class faculty for a high-energy showcase spanning jazz, folk, rock, hip-hop, electronica, and more. From innovative originals to fresh takes on beloved classics, this is a night that celebrates the vibrant soundscape of contemporary music.
A special highlight of the evening is the introduction of this year’s Henwood Family Prize for Emerging Artists winners—outstanding young musicians (ages 12 to 21) who will either take the stage for a live performance or have their music professionally recorded at the Conservatory.
Come and celebrate the creativity of our faculty and the next generation of emerging artists!
