MCO’s season-opening concert amplifies the visionary voices of Cree-Métis baritone and curator Jonathon Adams, Cree flutist-composer Jessica Sparvier-Wells (formerly McMann), and Cree filmmaker Tyson Houseman. Past, present and future are woven together in a call to reflect on the responsibilities of living on and from Indigenous land. Houseman’s extraordinary projections will fill the newly opened Desautels Concert Hall as we witness a Cree takeover of the historical Lament form through story, song, light and shadow.
The Lamentation is a musical expression of grief. We hear it first in Lament for Small Souls, scored for solo flute and voice. Written after the discovery of 751 unmarked graves on the grounds of the Marieval Indian Residential School, Sparvier-Wells' overwhelming piece gives the visceral sense that not only the composer, but the land itself mourns these little ones. This is followed by the first of two plague-era Lamentation settings by 18th century Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. In these Baroque motets Zelenka uses Biblical depictions of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians as allegorical vessels for his own doubt, shame and despair.
Interpolated into these expressions of loss, we hear Sparvier-Wells' For Nikawîy and Mountain Prairie: The first, a hyper-personal confession of longing through a forced-adoption lens, the second an invocation of the powerful medicines alive within the Rocky Mountains. We end with composer John Adams’ 1988 setting of Walt Whitman’s The Wound Dresser. This is a vivid, conflicted remembrance written in old age of the poet’s own service as a young volunteer nurse during the American Civil War. Through a care-filled curation of lived experience and seemingly distant memory, Jonathon Adams sings an accounting of colonial violence on stolen land. The tender dressing of war wounds, the apocalyptic fall of once sacred walls, the return of young bodies to the ground they were made of – these painful visions encircle an ecstatic hope of reconciliation with the land and water. This concert will leave you changed.Jessica Sparvier-Wells (formerly McMann) is an artist in the total sense. A classically trained flutist, the Alberta-based Cree musician is also a dancer, choreographer, and composer. She interweaves land, Indigenous identity, history, and language throughout her art, and has thrilled and moved audiences across western Canada and northern Europe. Her 2023 album recording, Prairie Dusk – a follow up to the celebrated Incandescent Tales (2021) – is available on all platforms. Sparvier-Wells is currently pursuing her MFA in unceded Coast Salish territory. 
Tyson Houseman is one of the most unique artists to grace the MCO stage. He is a nehiyaw (plains cree) interdisciplinary video artist, puppeteer, and actor. As a visual artist alone, his work astounds for eclecticism. Painting, filmmaking, photography, video projection – Houseman does all of it powerfully and to growing acclaim. As an actor, his work as Quil Ateara in the Twilight Saga (you read that right) is known to millions. He recently completed an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and has toured all over the world as a performer and puppeteer.   
Jonathon Adams is a phenomenon. One of North America’s most thrilling young baritones, the Cree-Métis (Nêhiyaw-Michif) artist joins the MCO fresh off working with the New York Phil. Gifted with an effortlessly rich, enveloping, and lyrical baritone voice, Adams fuses their vocal talents with their lived experiences as a non-binary Indigenous person. Specializing in Early and Baroque music, they consistently prove that there is room to be both dedicated to historically informed performance practice – while remaining authentic to who one is and what they believe.

Emmanuel Bach is a renowned Brazilian guitar player who has captivated audiences with his unique style and expertise. With a career spanning over two decades, he has collaborated with some of the most influential artists in the music industry, including Ivan Lins, Airto Moreira, and Flora Purim.
John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery was an American jazz guitarist and composer, known for his unusual technique of plucking guitar strings with the side of his thumb and for his extensive use of octaves. His recordings up to 1965 were oriented towards hard bop, soul jazz, and post-bop, and his later style influenced jazz fusion and smooth jazz. 
Patrick Bruce Metheny is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He was the leader of the Pat Metheny Group and continues to work in various small-combo, duet, and solo settings, as well as other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, latin jazz, and jazz fusion.

Originally from Edmonton, Lindsay Woolgar is a bassist and vocalist who now lives in Winnipeg. Her extensive musical training and experience allows her to play both double bass and electric bass in a variety of genres, although jazz remains her first love and main musical influence in all of its many forms. Lindsay is a member of Winnipeg-based bands Juvel, French Class, and the Grey Jays and has recorded and toured with other artists as Ben Sures, Selci, Matt Foster, Billie Zizi, Bobby Dove and Jess Rae.
Raymond Matthews Brown was an American jazz double bassist, known for his extensive work with Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. He was also a founding member of the group that would later develop into the Modern Jazz Quartet. 
Esperanza Emily Spalding is an American bassist, singer, songwriter, and composer. Her accolades include five Grammy Awards, a Boston Music Award, a Soul Train Music Award, and two honourary doctorates.

Handsome Tiger, an Anishinaabe Métis and North African music producer/DJ hailing from Turtle Island and currently based in Vancouver, BC, blends traditional sounds from his heritage with other Indigenous and contemporary electronic bass music. A familiar face in the West Coast music community, Handsome Tiger has performed at numerous shows and amassed a collection of releases. With a passion for bass music, he actively supports and contributes to Vancouver's underground scene and has gained popularity in the North American festival circuit, appearing at events such as Bass Coast, Shambhala, Envision, Lightning in a Bottle, Mutek, Texas Eclipse, and more. His DJ sets fuse various flavors of sound system culture and global bass sounds, igniting dance floors wherever he performs.

Back by popular demand, we're thrilled to announce the return of our How To Listen To Jazz series.
One part history lesson and two parts musical performance, this series of How To Listen To Jazz presents local jazz performers in themed concerts that focus on composers and instruments from the rich tradition of jazz music. Two musical sets, each centred around a specific composer, will be interspersed with educational anecdotes, stories, and historical context to help develop the audience’s ability to appreciate and understand the music and its history.
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn how to listen to jazz with some of Winnipeg’s favourite musicians!

Jonathan Challoner is one of Canada’s most versatile and creative voices on the trumpet. Growing up in Qualicum Beach, BC, he was surrounded by a wonderful community of mentors and educators including Phil Dwyer, Ingrid Jensen and Arnie Chycoski. He went on to become an integral part of Toronto’s vibrant and diverse music scene, then relocated to New York City to study at the Juilliard School. He is currently on faculty at the University of Manitoba and can be seen performing internationally with many of the world’s most acclaimed jazz, classical, salsa, musical theater, and pop artists. Recently Jonathan has been featured on Bobby Sanabria and the Multiverse Big Band’s 2024 Grammy-nominated album, Vox Humana.
Louis Daniel Armstrong, nicknamed "Satchmo", "Satch", and "Pops", was an American trumpeter and vocalist. He was among the most influential figures in jazz. His career spanned five decades and several eras in the history of jazz.
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading figure of the bebop era.

Jazz at the Fort Garry Hotel is located in The Club Room on the lower level of The Fort Garry Hotel. The venue is wheelchair accessible with assistance - please inform the hotel's front desk staff if you'd like to use the elevator to access the lower level.
