ABOUT CHEEKFACE
 
Cheekface is an indie rock trio, more precisely a talk-singing band, from Los Angeles.
The story starts in 2017. Things were getting pretty crappy on Earth. Indie rock lifers Greg and Mandy got together to write out the anxiety, despair and the bleak humor of it all. They sent the demos to Echo and, voila, a band. 
It wasn't a project that started with much ambition: the idea was to drop a record on Bandcamp and call it a day. But in 2018, the band's second single "Dry Heat/Nice Town," a playful pub rock tune about leftist protest culture, started to snowball online. A word-of-mouth cult started to form, and it intensified with Cheekface's community-minded singalong shows. Fans dubbed themselves "Cheek Freaks."
The band chased their 2019 debut LP "Therapy Island" with 2021's "Emphatically No," which bowed as Bandcamp's top-selling alternative album. Their 3rd LP "Too Much to Ask" in 2022 was a watershed moment: it shot to #2 on the non-commercial radio chart, and The Needle Drop proclaimed it one of the year's best albums. Cheekface's 4th album "It's Sorted" came out January 22, 2024. Touring to support "It's Sorted," the band sold out shows across the US, Canada and the UK.

Amir Bissen - Violin
Amir Bissen, born into a renowned musical family, began playing the violin at just four years old at the Central Music School in Almaty. By seven, he had his first public performance with the Kazakh State Symphony Orchestra and gained recognition through various competitions, TV, and radio broadcasts. At twelve, Amir moved to England to study at the Purcell School of Music. He achieved notable success, including becoming the youngest winner of the instrumental category at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, where he earned the Gold Medal and the title of 'International Instrumentalist of the Year.’ He later recorded his debut CD and performed in a UK concert series. Amir debuted at the Royal Festival Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra, playing the Bruch Violin Concerto on a Guarneri del Gesù violin. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, he has travelled the world, participating in prestigious festivals and masterclasses with masters like Ida Haendel and Ivry Gitlis. After studying with Professor Zakhar Bron in Switzerland, Amir produced an online teaching resource series based on Bron's methods while teaching at the Central Music School and the Kazakh National Conservatory. Currently, Amir lives in Winnipeg, completing his Master's degree at the University of Manitoba under Dr. Oleg Pokhanovski. He founded the Vitality Quartet and aims to organize performances throughout Manitoba and establish a Violin Academy focused on the Soviet Violin School's rich teaching tradition.
Hasmik Avdalyan - Violin
Hasmik Avdalyan is a talented violinist from Armenia. She holds Postgraduate and Master's degrees from the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK and Yerevan State Conservatory in Armenia. Hasmik has succeeded in various prestigious competitions and has performed at numerous musical festivals worldwide. She has had the privilege of working with renowned violinists such as Maxim Vengerov, Silvia Rosenberg, and Lewis Kaplan, among others.In addition to her performances, Hasmik is deeply dedicated to education. With years of experience as a violin and music teacher, she has also served as the Head of Music at the Haileybury Almaty International School, where she has inspired many students to explore the world of music.Currently, Hasmik collaborates as a substitute violinist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO). She also teaches at the Winnipeg Conservatory of Music and Groove Academy, where she finds joy in accompanying her students on the piano. Offstage, she enjoys watching movies and spending time with friends and her children.
Paul Baek - Viola
Canadian violinist and violist Paul Baek began his musical journey at age four, inspired by Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. He graduated with honours in Violin Performance from Western University and has shared his talents with orchestras across Southern Ontario. A versatile musician, Paul is skilled in various musical styles, including fiddle, bluegrass, country, opera, choral, pop, and jazz. He has also performed in numerous musical productions, including The Sound of Music, The Last Five Years, Bright Star, and West Side Story. Alongside his performing career, Paul has been a dedicated teacher since 2021, nurturing young musicians. Now residing in Winnipeg, he continues to expand his musical horizons, recently participating in the Rosamunde string program with WSO musicians. Outside of music, Paul enjoys theological and philosophical readings, engaging conversations, Korean cuisine, technology, scenic car rides with podcasts, and lively karaoke sessions.
Gabriella Oliveira - Cello
Gabriella Oliveira is a talented cellist from Brazil with a passion for music since an early age. She studied in Los Angeles under the tutelage of the renowned Polish cellist Marek Szpakiewicz. An accomplished chamber musician, Gabriella has earned several honours as a cellist in various chamber ensembles. She has also performed as a soloist with orchestras in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States.Gabriella has had the privilege of participating in masterclasses and collaborating with renowned musicians such as Midori Goto, Martin Chalifour, Marin Alsop, Nelson Freire, Giancarlo Guerrero, Antonio Meneses, and Johannes Moser. Additionally, she has performed in major concert venues throughout South America.Currently based in Winnipeg, Gabriella enjoys performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as a substitute player and is passionate about advocating for music education in South America. Alongside her duo partner, Colombian pianist Hector Pinzon, she teaches and plays recitals for children in underrepresented communities. Offstage, Gabriella finds solace in psychology books, culinary adventures, and singing along to 80s jams.
Fan-En Chiang - Piano
Taiwanese-Canadian pianist, composer, and educator Fan-En Chiang is a multi-talented artist whose achievements have earned him recognition on national and international stages. A top-prize winner in prestigious competitions, Fan-En secured 2nd prize at the Canadian Music Competition, 1st prize at the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association Provincial Scholarship Competition, and was awarded both the Aikins Memorial Trophy (2020) and the Lieutenant Governor's Trophy at the Winnipeg Music Festival.Fan-En has captivated audiences as a guest artist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, performing in diverse programs such as Community Celebration, Halloween Spooktacular, and Manitoba Remembers: A COVID Elegy. His artistry was also highlighted as a Virtuosi Young Artist in the celebrated Virtuosi In-Camera Sessions: Ideas from Home.In 2024, Fan-En completed his Master’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Manitoba under the guidance of Dr. David Moroz. He also holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the same institution, where he studied with esteemed composers Örjan Sandred, Gordon Fitzell, and David Litke. As a composer, Fan-En draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of Western art music, Japanese film scores, and video game soundtracks, creating a unique and modern artistic voice.In addition to his performance and compositional pursuits, Fan-En is a dedicated educator, teaching piano and music theory to a thriving studio of over 30 students. With over five years of teaching experience, he is passionate about sharing the joy of music-making and fostering a love for the arts in his community.

ABOUT PHOSPHORESCENT:
As Phosphorescent, singer/songwriter Mathew Houck crafts ethereal Americana imbued with elements of country and indie rock. He embarked on a slow-burning journey that saw his music rise from dusty homespun albums to critically lauded and internationally recognized songs as he pushed on through the years. Houck wrote songs and toured solo in his early twenties, taking on the Phosphorescent moniker in 2001 and releasing several albums before signing to heavyweight indie label Dead Oceans with the release of 2007's Pride. Relocating from Athens, Georgia to Brooklyn, Houck assembled a cast of various bandmates, touring relentlessly through the 2000s and finding more success with each new album. 2013's Muchacho sold better than anything that came before it in Houck's catalog and included the standout cut "Song for Zula," which appeared in multiple films and television shows across the globe. After starting a family and moving to Nashville, Houck took several years off before re-emerging with 2018's C'est La Vie. Another long gap preceded the release of 2024's Revelator, his first outing for Verve.

ABOUT NAP EYES
Nap Eyes makes crooked, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Nova Scotian rain. Their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA, brain protein aggregation, and the Earth’s magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia, self-reproach, and drinking too much. In the world of Nap Eyes, workaday details punctuate (and puncture) cosmic concerns, as enigmatic songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitarist Nigel Chapman wrestles with air and angels, struggling (and often failing) to reconcile the Romantic rifts, both real and imagined, that define our lives: between chaos and order; solipsism and fellowship; the anxiety of social (dis)orders both big and small; and the various intersections and oppositions of religion, art, and science.
Nap Eyes songs resonate because they manage to balance delicately the cryptic and the quotidian, rendering a compellingly honest equivocation without evasiveness, a relatable ambivalence without apathy. As a result, both lyrically and musically, their music articulates the urgency of youthful grace. It’s the sound of being young and alive in the city, a tenuous and impermanent counterpoise of recklessness and anxiety, archness and earnestness. ABOUT ADA LEA:
Ada Lea is the musical project of Montreal’s Alexandra Levy. She has two albums released by Saddle Creek and Next Door Records (CA), including what we say in private and one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden, which earned her a spot on the Polaris Prize Long List in 2022. Beyond music, she paints, draws, reads, takes forest walks, cares for plants, and organizes a seasonal songwriting method. The third Ada Lea album—rumored to be her best yet—is set for release in 2025.

ABOUT PKEW PKEW PKEW:
There might have been a time when Toronto’s Pkew Pkew Pkew were the sort of punk band who revelled, unquestioningly, in the grimy chaos of the mosh pit, or an up-until-the-sun bender, or a skate session in an abandoned pool. But things have changed: the pit started to feel more like a workout, the bender gave way to a crushing hangover, and someone broke their wrist in that abandoned pool. That doesn’t mean that Mike Warne (guitars/vocals), Ryan McKinley (guitars/vocals), Emmett O’Reilly (bass/vocals) and David Laino (drums) will stop doing these things; it just means they realize they’re not good for them. So why don’t they stop?
Their new material doesn’t offer any solutions, but instead catalogues these behaviours with unflinching clarity and precision. Warne writes in the same tongue as plot-driven realists like The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, not trading in metaphors or coded language but in undressed, literalist narratives over Pkew’s supercharged twin-guitar crunch. In the spring of 2017, Finn himself came up to workshop songs with the band in Toronto. “You know in school when you can hand your work in early, and the teacher will read it and give it back to you, and then you can really hand it in? It was kinda like that,” grins Warne.
Pkew Pkew Pkew have been on this beat for a while. They’ve opened on cross-continental runs with Anti-Flag and The Flatliners, headlined dates across North America, Europe and the U.K., and become mainstays at punk festivals like Montreal’s Pouzza Fest and Gainesville blowout The Fest. Along the way, they’ve accrued a loyal fanbase of both “sports dads and young kids that wanna drink and barf on each other,” Warne laughs. While their 2016 self-titled debut angled more towards the minutiae of the late-20s punk life, their new material steps back to look at the root causes.
“Is this good or is this bad?” Warne ponders of the lifestyle Pkew sings about. “It’s fun to live like an idiot, but it’s probably bad, also. We’re all constantly wondering if we’ve ruined our lives forever or not, being in a band.”

Music is a huge highlight to blind commentary, and want to keep creating music which speaks upon man vs self, man vs man, and man vs world ideals-- the same ideals as artists they are influenced by. Women's Hockey - 2024/2025

The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra’s eighth album - Connections: East Meets West - showcases new works by acclaimed Canadian composers Fred Stride and Jean-Nicolas Trottier. A key goal of the WJO is fostering connections between jazz performers and composers across Canada.
Several years ago, the WJO approached Montreal-based Trottier to propose a collaborative commission. Without hesitation, he suggested Fred Stride, whom he had met in 2011 when Stride was presenting masterclasses at the University of Montreal. The collaboration resulted in the stunning nine-movement suite featured on this album.
Both Stride and Trottier are prolific jazz composers, and the WJO is thrilled to spotlight their work in this project. Unfortunately, neither composer will be present at the album release concert.

The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada’s first community-based, non-profit professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997 (registered charity in 2000), the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape, reflected in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Winnipeg Foundation, and other sponsors. ​The mandate of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is to be an instrumental force in the promotion and development of big band jazz in Manitoba and beyond, through performance, composition, recording and education.

After single-handedly redefining “warped” as the mind and mouth behind the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC’s, Keith Thornton — aka Kool Keith, Big Willie Smith, Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, and Tashan Dorrsett, among other personas — headed for the outer reaches of the stratosphere with a variety of solo projects. Keith’s lyrical thematics remained as free-flowing here as they ever were with the N.Y.C. trio, connecting up complex meters with fierce, layers-deep metaphors and veiled criticisms of those who “water down the sound that comes from the ghetto.” His own debut single, “Earth People” by Dr. Octagon, was quietly released in late 1995 on the San Francisco-based Bulk Recordings, and the track spread like wildfire through the hip-hop underground, as did the subsequent self-titled full-length released the following year.
Dr. OctagonecologystFeaturing internationally renowned DJ Q-Bert (of Invisibl Skratch Piklz) on turntables, as well as the Automator and DJ Shadow behind the boards, Dr. Octagon’s left-field fusion of sound collage, fierce turntable work, and bizarre, impressionistic rapping found audiences in the most unlikely of places, from hardcore hip-hop heads to jaded rock critics. Although a somewhat sophomoric preoccupation with body parts and scatology tended to dominate the album, Keith’s complex weave of associations and shifting references is quite often amazing in its intricacy. The record found its way to the U.K.-based abstract hip-hop imprint Mo’Wax (for whom Shadow also recorded) in mid-1996, and was licensed by the label for European release. Mo’Wax also released a DJ-friendly instrumental version of the album titled, appropriately, The Instrumentalyst.First Come, First Served
The widespread popularity of the album eventually landed Keith at DreamWorks in 1997. The label gave Dr. Octagon (retitled Dr. Octagonecologyst) its third release mid-year, adding a number of bonus cuts. In early 1999, however, Keith’s alter ego Dr. Dooom unfortunately “killed off” Dr. Octagon on the opening track of First Come, First Served (released on Thornton’s own Funky Ass label). Kool Keith signed to Ruffhouse/MCA for his second album under that alias, 1999’s Black Elvis/Lost in Space. Records released as Kool Keith followed in 2000 (Matthew) and 2001 (Spankmaster), while the 2002 collaboration Gene appeared as KHM (Kool Keith plus H-Bomb and Marc Live). His next project was a four-rapper group named Thee Undatakerz with Keith taking on a new persona, Reverend Tom. Kool Keith Presents Thee Undatakerz hit the streets in May 2004. Keeping busy, Keith released Diesel Truckers in August of the same year with old friend/producer KutMasta Kurt.Official Space Tape
As if 2004 hadn’t been filled with enough Kool Keith releases, some truly oddball ones started to appear that year. The Official Space Tape borrowed from previous releases to create the ultimate Keith mixtape; the R&B-leaning Personal Album was released in a limited edition of 500 and with a high price tag; plus the Real Talk label issued Dr. Octagon, Pt. 2, an unauthorized release that had little to do with the original and was quickly pulled from the shelves by court order. The next year was much calmer, with the Global Enlightenment, Pt. 1 DVD released at the beginning of the year, followed by Lost Masters, Vol. 2 in the summer. Nogatco Rd. from 2006 introduced a new character, Mr. Nogatco (“Octagon” backwards). The UFO-obsessed album was a collaboration with producer Iz-Real. The two-CD Collabs Tape compilation and The Return of Dr. Octagon followed soon after.The Best Kept Secret
In early 2007, Keith was part of an Ultramagnetic MC’s reunion that yielded Best Kept Secret. Tashan Dorrsett, another concept-driven release from Keith, was released in 2009 with the remix album The Legend of Tashan Dorrsett following in 2011. His 2012 album, Love and Danger, hinted at retirement with songs like “Goodbye Rap,” but he was still in business in 2013, making a guest appearance on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album Mosquito. In 2015 he collaborated with L’Orange and received co-billing with the producer on their album Time? Astonishing! He also collaborated with Ray West for an album titled A Couple of Slices, which was released as a standard LP as well as a limited deluxe edition packaged in a pizza box with a bonus 7″ and cassette. A third Tashan Dorrsett album, The Preacher, as well as Feature Magnetic, which featured guest appearances by MF Doom, Godfather Don, Sadat X, and others, arrived in 2016. Keith revived Dr. Octagon two years later with Moosebumps: An Exploration into Modern Day Horripilation.

What is Ecstatic Dance? It’s a unique form of free flowing movement where participants allow their bodies to express themselves without choreography and with the absence of talking. The practice is centered around connecting through music, the rhythm and your own inner energy, and may lead to trance and a feeling of ecstasy. True ecstatic dance adheres to 3 main guidelines: 1) no shoes, 2) no booze + 3) no talking. We are only going to follow 1 of those guidelines because YES there will be alcohol service and YES we will keep our shoes on. So for part of our PWR HR we are going to feel the music flow through our bodies with the absence of talking. It’s going to be an experience!

Jovelle Balani (she/her) is a Filipino-Canadian artist noted for her sultry, contralto voice. Her music incorporates influences from pop and old jazz to soul—a sound that is uniquely hers. She draws inspiration from the styles of Norah Jones, Nat King Cole, Amy Winehouse, Postmodern Jukebox, and the timeless classics of the Great American Songbook. Jovelle has captivated audiences by representing Canada at the World Championshipsof Performing Arts in Los Angeles. She has also shared the stage with award-winning Filipino artists at renowned venues such as the Canada Life Centre and Burton Cummings Theatre.
Jovelle recently participated in Creative Manitoba's Professional Mentorship Program and the St. Norbert Arts Centre’s Rise Up Mentorship Program. Through these experiences, she explored jazz and the music business, gaining valuable insights from a variety of inspiring mentors across Winnipeg.
